Freaking out - slapped cheek

Slapped cheek has occurred at my nursery this week, just one case that I know of. This is dangerous for pregnant women right? I’m at nursery a few times per week to collect and drop off dd. If she catches it by the time she shows symptoms it will be past the contagious point. I’m freaking out about this! It will be ok, right? I read the nhs info but it’s freaked me out even more!

You need to contact your midwife to let them know. IME, the midwife will then do some research to what they need to do next. How many weeks are you?

I’m 9 weeks, nhs says I fall in risk period! Contacted midwife but not heard back yet. Nursery don’t know so I’m wondering if I should tell them too?

You might already have immunity to it, I think adults often do without realising as you might have had the virus as a child. When I was pregnant there was a case at my school (I’m a teacher) and I was worried - I think, if I remember rightly, I had a test that showed I was already immune and so no need to worry. Defo speak to midwife if you can

This happened to me, the MW got me to go to GP for immunity tests, I had no immunity.

My DC did catch slapped cheek, so they decided to monitor my immunity with another test at 20wks. I hadn't caught it, so all okay. Baby DD2 absolutely fine. As was I.

Try not to panic, hard though I know.

It was a blood test. I had to wait a few days for results each time.

Midwife or GP can do a blood test for immunity. My GP did it for me.

I’ve just had booking in bloods, can they not tell from that? I’m phobic about having blood taken! Although of course if I have to do it then I have to do it!

They won’t be able to tell from your booking in bloods as it is not a routine screening test. I know, I have just had the test done yesterday for same reason!

Hi just wanted to add @LadyPug my daughter had slapped cheek when I was 9 weeks pregnant then when I was 10 weeks my son appeared with it. Unfortunately there isn’t anything can do as you don’t realise your child has it until the rash comes out. I was the same as you so panicky etc. When I had my mw appointment the booking in and she took the bloods j told her about my children both having slapped cheek and she phoned the lab and asked them to also screen for the virus. Iv just got my results back to show that I have antibodies already. The midwife said that 95% of women are already protected from it and have already came into contact with it at some point in their life either through their children or when they was a child themselves. She also told me the nhs has to put that “disclaimer” on the website so that it has warned people sufficiently if they was to catch it.
I would go to your drs or ask midwife if they can screen the blood you already have had taken or have another sample done. They will then find out if your immune.
Please try not to worry I was worried sick the same I’m now 15 weeks and both babies doing just fine (pg with twins) my son and daughter slapped cheek has long gone too.

Oh thank you Bez that’s so good to know. I hate not knowing if dd has it, it could take up to 21 days for symptoms to come out if she has!

I was working with children who had slapped cheek when I was 10 weeks pregnant. Had the blood test which showed I was immune so all was ok.

@ladypug the bloods can take a while to come back but mine did come back as positive for antibodies for it so I had it at some point in my life. It is worrying but like I said both my children had it when I was 9 then 10 weeks pregnant and everyone I spoke to didn’t seem too concerned they did do blood test but said they wasn’t concerned unless I showed symptoms of having it which I didn’t.

If you've very recently had your booking bloods they may be able to still test from that sample- a similar thing happened to me but with chicken pox (I'd never had them but they wanted to double check my immunity)
