So two positive pregnancy tests today, not planned but it will be ok....not told dp yet as he's at work....please help with my dumb questions as I've never been pregnant before

  • I drank this weekend.... too late now I know but chance of this causing issues?

  • pregnancy tests said 3 weeks + which apparently means 5 weeks?????

  • what do i need to do about going to a Dr?

  • would a surfing trip in 3 weeks be a bad idea

  • oh and how the hell do I tell do...im on the pill but had a dodgy tummy a few times

Eeeek I float between excitement and terror. It's not ideal timing to say the least but oooh I can't help but not care really

Just wanted to say congrats, and I hope your DP reacts better than my DH did;he just grunted and shrugged and said ok... I'm 35 weeks now and he's a lot more excited thankfully.
I always make sure if I have soft cheeses like brie that they're cooked properly purely because I love the stuff so damn much and don't like making myself sick. But definitely read the guidelines on the NHS website in regards to foods.
I've got no advice on vitamins as I didn't take them so listen to pp advice on those.
And I certainly agree with the pp who mentioned about the effectiveness of the pill.. my nan had 3 children while on the pill. Don't know if she was unlucky or just really fertile. Either way. 😂

Oh. Actually, prepare for possible constipation. Lactulose will help as will drinking plenty of water and cravings can be totally crazy or non existent. I have a ton of food aversions. Some come and go, others I haven't been able to stand for the whole of it. And if you can't cope with a healthy diet for the 1st trimester don't feel bad. It does get better 😊

You'll need lactulose after the birth too. My first poo was worse than my 36hr labour!

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I took a test that said 3weeks plus... it turned out i was in fact 10/11 weeks!

You don't necessarily have to go to the drs first... they will only refer you to a hospital of your choice which you can do yourself online at the hospital of your choice. However, depends on your area as some have midwives based in their surgeries.

Bare in mind OP that when you tell DP he is just hearing it then as a shock so don't be worried if he isn't instantly over the moon. You've had a few hours to come to terms with it all, so don't panic if he's not ecstatic.

Long thread, so not sure if this has been said already, but 3+ weeks means 5 or more weeks. Not necessarily bang on 5 weeks. Congrats, btw! :)

Firstly congratulations! I was the same, both scared and excited but it’s such a blessing.

Drinking won’t affect bubba at all, I found at 10 weeks I was pregnant and was drinking up until a couple weeks before.

Yes you’re about five weeks but when you see the Dr they can clarify that for you. Nothing you need to know, if you’re in the UK the Dr should ask when your last period was, tell them you took a test and it said three weeks. They should also refer you to a hospital (they will get in touch with you) and make sure they prescribe you on to pregnacare vitamins! They are expensive if you choose to buy them.

Surfing shouldn’t be too bad this early on though it depends how good you are ;)

And finally there are so many (creative) ways but if you are scared I suggest maybe just showing him the test? That way it’s pretty self explanatory and you don’t need to say much

Good luck and congrats again!

If you're really not sure about dates, you can get a private dating scan from about £40-80 depending on your area. This will also rule out ectopic pregnancy and let you know if everything is progressing as it should. And you get a picture to take home. They often have availability at short notice, so you could get one before you go on hols.

Regarding surfing, I'd probably do it, if I really wanted to, and was in the first trimester as the tiny tiny foetus is still well in the pelvis so a typical injury (hit with a board, broken leg?! I'm a skier your boards are well out of my area of expertise) are unlikely to affect the bean and a catastrophic injury is unlikely.

Regarding being cold - it's not the flip side of being hot. The reason hot tubs aren't recommended is that there's a link between raised body temp due to fever and neural tube defects especially in the first trimester. Being a bit cold (unless you're actually freezing) won't affect your core temp in the same way.

I really rated 'Expecting Better' as it explains the science behind recommendations, e.g. caffeine, not cleaning the cat's litter box, avoiding some fish...so lets you make up your own mind. I also liked the Mumsnet Pregnancy / Babies books as a kind of condensed version of the irreverent yet practical advice you get on here.

Finally, it sounds like you might be a June due date? Whatever it is, have a look in the antenatal clubs and you'll find loads of people in the exact same boat. I'm five weeks myself as it happens...

Best of luck!

Congratulations OP.

Just want to comment re surfing. Lots of people saying it's fine. Reasearch it. I researched exercise with no 1 and there's no way in the world I would have gone surfing. Essentially: gentle, low impact exercise - good. Medium impact exercise that you already do now - also fine, just don't start anything that you don't do already. High impact - avoid. There will be people coming on saying 'I did x and I was fine' but the research shows you do have a higher chance of miscarriage with high impact stuff. And that includes 1st trimester.

Congratulations! Regarding the chance of ectopic, I unfortunalty lost my baby to an ectopic. Watch out for shoulder tip pain, stabbing pain in lower tummy (left or right) and prune juice coloured discharge (yuk i know!) i'm sure you'll be fine though there are other reasons for ectopics, the risk is tiny really xxx 🌸🌺

The dating scan sounds like a great idea, will see what's around our area. Is there a stage where it's too early for one?

Surfing we spoke about last night and I won't bother with, love it but it's not worth it. I've got other sports I'll keep up but that's not on3 Smile

Thank you for the info on ectopic laura sorry for your loss Flowers

Re the drinking thing... I got drunk (and btw I hardly ever drink so it was even more shock to my system no doubt!) when I was early pregnant with my son, and I went to a theme park! I had no idea I was pregnant.... Two massive no-nos, but he's an absolutely perfect and intelligent (to the point we had to find different education) little man now. Don't worry about it!

Yes please let us know how you get on. I had a friend who found out she was pregnant and guessed she was 6 weeks max - when she went for the scan she saw a 'proper baby' on the screen. Turns out she was 26 weeks and the bleeding she'd had was ectropion!

OP, I've been looking into this as I am in a similar boat vis a vis unknown datings. The earliest one I've found is from 6 weeks (or 2 weeks after positive pregnancy test) and that's by a company called window into the womb. Babybond do one from 6 weeks too, I believe- they're pricier but have better reviews. Heybaby4d do from 9 weeks onwards.

I'm still waiting for him to freak out like i did but so far nothing!!

Thank you for the links. I'll have a chat with him tonight. He's nagging to get a gp appointment (I HATE drs, yes aware I need to get over that fast). But seems unnecessary in many cases

Still feels very surreal to be honest!

OP you don't need to pay for a private scan to date the pregnancy. If you tell the GP/midwife straight away you can't remember when your last period was they will get you in for a scan. I was scanned within a week.

Northernbeachbum · 17/10/2017 16:32

Awesome thank you. I'm still convinced it's not true......i might have to do another test before I ring up the GP just so I don't feel like I might be making a fool of myself Blush
