Finding out gender at 16 weeks

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone has found out the gender of their baby at 16 weeks just by an NHS ultrasound? I have a scan next Wednesday, and it's my consultant that's doing the scan, so I'm just curious as to whether he'll be able to tell the sex of the baby or if it'll still be too early?

Pretty sure 16 weeks is when you CAN find out via private gender scans. So can't imagine they won't tell you if you ask.

Good luck x

I never had a 16 weeks scan. My youngest is 3.4 years old. Is this a thing now on the NHS, a gender scan at 16 weeks? Just curious.

You'll probably be given an accurate result. Good luck.
Just don't neglect the 20 week scan... it's the most important one.

Scrumptiousbears · 13/10/2017 18:31

The early scans I had on NHS were 12 weeks and 20 weeks. Nothing in between.

cushioncovers · 13/10/2017 18:31

What’s the scan for op? If it’s for a particular reason your consultant might not be willing to have a look at the sex of the baby.

Wooders09 · 13/10/2017 18:32

I had a scan at 16wks which was done by the consultant (due to losing a previous baby at 21wks). I asked if he could tell if it was a boy or girl and he could see it was a boy but wouldn't commit to it as said it was still early!!! However towards the end of the scan the baby moved and it was very obvious it was a boy! I think it's easier to see if it's a boy at 16wks than a girl.

Had my 20wk scan and was confirmed again it was a boy!

Tammy1984 · 13/10/2017 18:32

No no, this is just a check up scan for me, I have Low Papp A so I'm getting scans every 4 weeks! Thank you, I'll be attending every scan lol x

I had both my 12 week scans at about 13 weeks. At both, after being asked by my husband, the sonographer said it looked like a boy. I remember in one of them he said he was 80% sure. They were both boys.

cushioncovers · 13/10/2017 18:34

Ah I see so it’s the extra scans they give you to check on the baby’s growth because of low Pap A

cushioncovers · 13/10/2017 18:35

Papp not pap

I'm pregnant with twins and we had a 16 week NHS scan, we asked at the start if it was possible to tell sex at this time, she said yes as long as they don't keep their legs crossed, would you like to know? I'll have a look at the end for you. It was pretty damn obvious they were two boys though! We were a bit worried about asking but she was more than happy to. She said they usually had more time to do it at 16 than 20 weeks (but they did re confirm at 20 weeks)

mrskitty15 · 13/10/2017 19:19

We had a gender scan yesterday (16+5) and they said it was a boy and pointed things out to us on the screen, we already have a girl and thought it would probably be another girl so we are still slightly in shock!

Bananamama1213 · 13/10/2017 20:35

I have a scan at 16+6 with "foetal monitoring" at a specialist hospital. Because of medication I'm on, they want to check all is okay with the baby.

I've been wondering the same thing as I know it's 16 weeks that they can tell. I'll definitely be asking, but I'm not too fussed if they can see or not because my anomaly scan is booked for 3 weeks later so I'd find out then anyway!

MagicFajita · 13/10/2017 20:41

If they can see the baby's sex they can tell you , but they won't confirm until 20 weeks.

I had a consultant scan at 16 weeks (due to previous genetically problematic pregnancy) and the consultant told me what she saw no problem.

Expectingbsbunumber2 · 13/10/2017 20:45

They probably could but I would be more resssured by the sex at the 20 week scan

Tammy1984 · 14/10/2017 08:05

Sorry I should have been a bit more specific, I'm getting scans every 4 weeks from 16 weeks due to my baby girl being stillborn in October 2016, she was 36 weeks and I was due to be induced the week after she died, my baby just couldn't hold on any longer due to the placenta failing because of Low Papp A, hence the extra care this time round! I'm not fussed if we don't find out on Wednesday, as my 20 week scan is already booked for the 15th of November, I'm just curious lol. Thanks for all the replies x

I found early on the mine was about as apparently it was quite obvious. Good luck OP.

Opheliasgoldenwine · 14/10/2017 08:11

I had a private one at 16 weeks; however, she was the wrong way round and no amount of star jumps, wriggling or climbing stairs turned her. Went back a week or two later and they could tell me then.

Soon2bemum2017 · 14/10/2017 08:57

Hey OP they probably will tell you if you ask... some sonographers are nicer than others.

I have low papp-a and in my extra scans some have been very much not showing me the screen etc and some are just like a repeat of 20 week scan where they want to show you everything!

The one thing i would say is be cautious if they tell you girl at 16 weeks as its more likely to ge wrong this was round rather than if they tell you boy Smile

I'm sorry to hear about your previous loss Flowers it's good thet are taking extra care of you this time round!

Tammy1984 · 14/10/2017 10:47

I have heard that if they tell you a girl at 16 weeks it could be wrong, I'll ask and take whatever they say lightly until it's confirmed at 20 weeks lol. Thank you soontoobemummy2017, it was her birthday just Wednesday past there and it's been a difficult time Halo
