Midwife appointment - do you turn up WITH the wee sample or do it when you get there?!

Sorry for probably the daftest question of the day! At my booking appointment I was given a tube and one of those round lipped things to pour it in (lovely) for a urine sample.

I have 16 week appointment coming up, am I to assume that I provide sample earlier in the day and bring with me, or do I do it while I'm there in case they need to know when it was done?

I'm sure midwife will give me a stern look if I get it wrong!

Before your appointment. I used to nip to the loo while I was waiting.

AccrualIntentions · 13/10/2017 08:22

The first couple of times I did mine when I was at the appointment, then she told me she meant I should bring one with me. So I hand over a sample that I've prepared earlier, and they give me a clean jar for next time.

reallybadidea · 13/10/2017 08:23

It doesn't matter when it was done, you can do it at home if that's easier

BoredOnMatLeave · 13/10/2017 08:23

I always did before. I think 1st wee of the day is preferred but I only did that on the days I had an appointment in the morning.

TiramisuQueenoftheFaeries · 13/10/2017 08:23

If they've already given you a pot and told you to do it for that appointment either do it at home just before you leave or when you get there. I just get given a pot when I arrive for a mw appointment and take it to the loo there.

MacTweedy · 13/10/2017 08:26

I did it there as they give the actual sample back and I didn’t want to use the same pot!

mindutopia · 13/10/2017 09:40

It doesn't really matter. You can do it before you see them on the day or at home. I do it at home as it's just easier and I don't have to go around with a full bladder all morning. I just wouldn't wait until you go in for your appointment and then interrupt to go do it as it will just make her late for her next one. So really whatever you're comfortable with.

BabyOrSanta · 13/10/2017 09:43

If you're anything like me, you turn up with the sample when they don't need it and have to do it there, while they wait, when you do need it... Blush

EvilCleverDog · 13/10/2017 09:46

I always did mine at home as tended to get the wee everywhere but in the pot when trying at the doctors.

Bought a cheap plastic jug, wee'd in that then decanted into the sample pot.

TonicAndTonic · 13/10/2017 09:47

I got told they want the first wee of that day brought to each appointment.

Urglewurgle · 13/10/2017 13:18

I used to grab a pot off reception and do it just before I went in.

bunnyrabbit93 · 13/10/2017 13:23

I always do mine at home. If I’m there I can never seem to go Hmm.

BentleyBelly · 13/10/2017 15:24

Mine asks for fresh sample during the appointment and hands me a pot then and there. I always make sure I have a large drink about 45 mins before!

TriJo · 13/10/2017 15:33

I do it when I get there, I often have a tea on the way to the appointment (most of mine are at 9am and I drop my kid off at nursery 45 minutes before) and I'll definitely need to go as a result!

Mummyh2016 · 13/10/2017 15:37

I always did it before apart from the time I forgot to take a pot at the previous appointment. My midwife never asked me when the sample was from.

Scrumptiousbears · 13/10/2017 15:54

I was always given an empty pot at my appt for the next appt. They also said they preferred a morning one wherever possible.

PandaCat · 13/10/2017 16:56

I do it at home, I can't pee in those tiny pots without it going on my hands so I have a jug especially for it at home Grin

Bobbiepin · 13/10/2017 17:01

Don't interrupt your appointment to pee and don't show up without urine. Otherwise it doesn't matter. You're fine using the same pot too, just give it a rinse out.

GuntyMcGee · 13/10/2017 17:13

It doesn't matter what time of day you do it as long as it's done the same day as the appointment (an hour or two before is ideal as it's fresher).

Some women do it first thing and carry it round all day, some will get to appointment a bit early and do it before being called in.

But please do it before you go into the clinic room as you have limited appointment time and some women take aaaaaaages to pee, which means appointments can run over.

It's really important to take a wee sample to all antenatal appointments as the midwife (or consultant) will be looking for signs of UTIs, pre eclampsia and diabetes. We can tell a lot from your pee.

WineAndTiramisu · 13/10/2017 18:29

However, if they send it off for culture (which mine does), using a non sterile jug first messes up the results, so you may end up with antibiotics you don't actually need...
Could clean out the jug first with boiling water, should work.

Hairgician · 13/10/2017 23:22

I was told at my booking app that all urine samples are now sent to the lab regardless. So it will be a fresh sterile pot each time.

FindingNemoandDory · 14/10/2017 08:44

Thank you all! I took mine with me (after nearly leaving it on the sink at work 😂) and all was good

Midwife was lovely (I secretly found her a little scary at first appointment!) and I have a pot for next time which I will know what to do with!

I do mine the night before as my appointments are always early and they always do a scan ( due to increased risk) for which I need a full bladder.
