I had been told at 5 weeks it was twins but today there was only one. I feel guilty but I am relieved. I was starting to panic about coping. Somehow 4 under 6 feels more managable than 5.

On the other hand, I'm back where I started. This has been a very surreal time!

Are you ok ??

ceolas · 10/04/2007 20:53

Bit of an emotional rollercoaster for you zephyrcat. Hope things go smoothly from here on in.

zephyrcat · 11/04/2007 11:01

I'm ok thanks

I feel strangely relieved. There is so much going on just now the thought of having twins was really starting to make me panic. It's hard to explain, it's a strange feeling to have, I keep thinking I should feel something else - sad or something. DP is not happy. He really wanted twins.

Ooh zephyr, what a weird one, I hope you are ok.

GillL · 11/04/2007 11:28

I saw a program on tv a while ago and they said that it is quite common for the pregnancy to start out with twins but for one of them to be absorbed back in to the body early on. I would have felt exactly the same as you if it had happened to me. I didn't cope very well with the baby stage, especially early on and I don't think I could cope with 2 at once. I was very relieved at my first scan when they said there was only 1. I'm sure what you're feeling is normal. Hopefully your dp will start to feel better soon.

I know a lady who had identical twins and a singleton on her first scan, she was trying to work out how to hitch prams together etc. Only the singleton was there at her next scan though - she too was somewhat relieved.

RubyGirl · 23/04/2007 13:28

This is a bit scary for me. I am expecting twins - at what stage is there no possibility of one being 'absorbed back'? Am only just getting used to the idea of two..

Twinmummyx2 · 23/04/2007 18:30

When i went for my 12 week scan i could see there was twins moving around. The scan lady said there was a 3rd but it wasn't properly formed. I had a scan nearly a week later and my body had absorbed it.
It was a weird emotion, i was sad, but at the same time thinking how could i have coped with triplets when i have 6 others.

It is quite common apparently. hope you are ok.xx

Nbg · 23/04/2007 18:32

Wow Zephyr!

That must have been some shock.
You ok now?

zephyrcat · 23/04/2007 18:36

I'm still in limbo really!

For those who don't know, I actually went to have a termination with this pregnancy, but when they told me it was twins at the scan and gave me something to 'connect' with, I did an immediate u-turn. All in all it's been a bit of a bizarre time!

The vanishing twin thing is certainly a very peculiar thing to get your head around.

Hi Zephyr- sorry to hear about the news at your scan, it must have been a shock- BUT, on the other hand twins would have been a lot to cope with in your situation (ie already having 3 little ones). This little one is a very lucky chap/chapess... you might not be having him/her at all if it wasnt for that early scan. Come back soon to the October thread!

zephyrcat · 23/04/2007 18:51

Exactly - this one has survived the morning after pill and now this so it's determined if nothing else!!

I'm moving this week and likely to be offline for a while but once we're finally settled I'll be back over to the October thread

Good luck with the move Zephyr.

I felt exactly like you when I found out was pg 3 weeks ago.
Had a scan and things have changed a bit now.

zephyrcat · 23/04/2007 18:58

Congratulations It's amazing the difference a scan makes isn't it?

I have to admit, since finding out there is only one now, I'm a lot calmer about the whole thing. I was really beginning to panic!

Scan has made a hell of a difference though.

J20BABY · 24/04/2007 09:31

zephry only just found this, i didn't know, i hope you are ok x

RubyGirl · 24/04/2007 19:40

Zephyr, I should also have said how sorry I was to hear about your scan news and good luck with everything from here on in. I'm sure everything will be fine now

jabberwocky · 24/04/2007 19:45

Zephyr, when I went in for my first checkup with ds1 they said I was off my dates by at least a month b/c of how big I measured. Since I was absolutely certain of my dates I asked what other reason there could be (thinking "twins?"). Of course she said yes, twins. Since twins do run in my family i was really, really worried. 2 weeks later a scan showed a singleton and I began to measure appropriate for the time frame. I have always thought that it could very well have been a vanishing twin but like you felt nothing but overwhelming relief that it was just one!
