Steroid Injections scared!

I am due my first steroid injection tomorrow ahead of my csection next week at 38 weeks. I have heard horror stories about them and being injection phobia am working myself up about them. I am worried first about the pain as I am not good with things like that and secondly I have gestational diabetes so am worried about effects on baby as I have heard they can cause reduced fetal movements? I worry so much about his movements as it is so that would cause me huge anxiety. Just want him here safe now after a long worrying pregnancy

I had HE and was told I couldn't have steroid injections as it would make me poorly due to gd

GD sorry not He. I don't know why i was given differebt info. It's all confusing. I'm sure your healthcare team are right and I'm sure they'll look after u and help you feel less scared. I was terrified too.

I've been told it will make my sugars go haywire too and I may need admitting to hospital to control them but because my section is before 39 weeks I have to have steroids to help baby. Really scared. Thank you x

They thought I had GD, (silly mixup whole other story) I had to have my sugars monitored for 24 hours after each injection. It was sore but not painful, definitely manageable and I came home fine. No reduced movements or anything of the sort.
Had my csection around a month early and DD had an APGAR of 9 five minutes after birth.
Flowers it's a scary time (I sobbed when they told me I was so scared), but honestly the calmer you can be the better it'll be for you and your DS. Best wishes for you both.

Yes. I was in same boat had c section pre 30 weeks was told it would make me too ill to have the injection

Can’t help with the GD I’m afraid but I had two rounds of the steroid injections at different points and I would say it’s sore for about 3-5 minutes but not massively painful and I didn’t have any reduced movements

I didn’t have GD but had section at 38+4 and no steroid injection.

I had them a couple of weeks ago. The injection is painless but afterwards it stings for several minutes. It's over quickly though, please don't worry.

I have a phobia of needles, but just focussed on the fact that it was going to help my daughter. They are not particularly pleasant, the most I had afterwards was a tender butt cheek and a flushed face on one side for a few days, which is apparently a side affect. Hope all goes well for you.

I had two of these injections for the same reason as you OP. They're absolutely fine honestly. Take a few seconds to do and you won't hardly notice them doing it. Just wear some nice pants Wink

It's fine, honestly. Not pleasant while being singe, but afterwards I did notice that a lot of the pregnancy aches and pains in my lower back had subsided (5ft nothing, massive, 10lb baby at 38wks - begged for an early removal🤣)

My DS (who I was preg with at the time) was really active and I felt him completely change position so dramatically me and my husband were in hysterics. We said it was "roid rage" because of the steroid injection for him. The midwife did laugh at that one!

I had the steroid injection a few weeks back after a bleed. I also have GD.

I was admitted, as the injections had to be given 12 hours apart and I was given the first in the late evening. They also had to test my blood sugars every two hours, as the steroids can effect your blood sugar levels.

Mine, unfortunately rose so I was put on an insulin drip, so my blood sugars were then tested every hour for 24 hours.

I ended up being in hospital for four days. My baby was fine I was just very tired!

Thank you everyone! Had my first injection 8 hours ago and I was ok! Barely hurt at all. I went in preparing to be in agony and it was probably about a 2 out of 10. Had it done in my thigh and thigh is ok too. No pain, no swelling, no bruising etc. Not so worried for my second one tomorrow now. Just got to keep eye on blood sugars already gone up a bit. Had a 7.9 after lunch instead of usual 6 something. Been told if I get 2 over 10 then I will be admitted so really hoping I can avoid it! Thank you again everyone for your support and advice :) I have noticed little man more active after the steroids rather than less which I was worried about

Thank you :) Little man has been super active since lol. I was scared of reduced movements as read common but had feet sticking out galore

The GD consultant said I had to stay in, after I had two results over 9 or 10.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that your levels are okay 👌

Yes mine too. My steroids are being done as an outpatient but if I get 2 over 10 I will be admitted for the insulin drip. Really hoping I'm not as want a relaxing week at home before the csection as I am terrified about it so need calm and sleep xx
