6 week scan

Hi, hoping for some reassurance or at least someone's experienced something similar...

This is my first pregnancy, and my husband and I got a bit overexcited and booked a viability/reassurance scan at (what I thought was) six weeks, two days. I've been tracking my periods, so am reasonably confident about the dates.

Anyway, went to the scan today and the ultrasounder said that I was measuring nearer between 4/5 weeks. There was an apparently decent looking sac and yolk, wifh nice solid outlines, but it was smaller than she'd have expected for six weeks +. She said that either my dates were out, or the baby has stopped developing (at which point I obviously got a bit snottery and upset). She's recommended I speak to my EPU on Monday for HCG tests, or coming back for another scan in 10 days.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? I'll contact my EPU as soon as it opens, but at the moment I just wished I'd never gone for the scan...

I almost wish they didn't do scans this early! Dates will never be the 100%, it's so worrying!
Had this with both pregnancies, both progressed and dates were corrected. Please try not to worry (stupid thing to say I know)

I had this with DS who's now 19m old. Went back two weeks later and there he was. In my case they set my due date back a couple of weeks from the date by LMP and it moved again at my 12 week scan.

You won't know for a while what's going on - I hope it's a good outcome for you but only time will tell right now.

Thank you - I'm trying to convince myself to be reasonable, and that I still feel quite pregnant (sick, sore boobs). If I'd not gone for the scan, I'd have been content and enjoying my alcohol-free Saturday.

Similar thing happened to me. I went for an early scan to put my mind at ease due to a previous miscarriage. I was adamant I was 6 weeks because I knew my period dates etc but when in the scan she told me I was either around 4/5 weeks or the pregnancy wasn't successful. They did my bloods over two days and it showed my hcg levels had doubled which gave me some reassurance. After my experience I really don't think they should perform early scans until you believe you are at least 8/9 weeks. It would save a lot of people a lot of anxiety and worry and upset. I'm sure all will be ok op and your ovulation date was perhaps a little later in the month then expected

Hello, I have just been through something similar! I had a little bit of bleeding so my hcg levels were monitored and then when I thought I was 7 weeks (also know when my lmp was so was convinced!!) I had a scan as I was still having a little bit of spotting. There was a sac there but it was only around 4/5 weeks and empty. I assumed the worst and was booked back in for a week later for another scan. When I went back last Wednesday she said I was dead on 6 weeks and there was a tiny little heartbeat. It may just be that your dates aren't quite right, maybe you ovulated late or something. Don't lose hope

Hi OP. I really hope things work out for you. How long ago did you get your positive pregnancy test result? I found that was the way if telling I had miscarried. My 6 week scan showed up as being no bigger than about 4+4. I had my positive pregnancy test 3 weeks before so I knew then that the pregnancy had not worked out, as it would have been impossible to get a positive test that early (it would have meant that I'd actually got the positive before I'd even conceived)

Hi WhyTheHeck, I see what you mean - I didn't get my positive until 25 September, although I'd been testing daily until then... so that would work with me ovulating later than I'd thought. I'm sorry things didn't work out for you I've been floored by how gutted I've felt since yesterday.

My dates (and I was sure of them, I'd thought) were more than a week out in the end. Having read several similar threads on mumsnet over the years I waited until 7-8 weeks before I booked a scan (but totally understand the impatience!). Hope it all works out.

Op you're definitely still in the game then! Keep us updated. Also I am fine thanks, it was horrendous at the time but I was lucky enough to catch immediately after and I'm now 12 weeks pregnant (scan tomorrow :-) )

I wish they didn't scan this early too, unless strictly needed for medical purposes.

I had a scan when I thought I was 12 weeks. I wasn't I was 7 (I have PCOS so periods were irregular). Baby was so minute we almost couldn't find her, the sonographer was about to go and get the internal scanner. She found a heartbeat eventually, but it was far too early for anything else and I had to go back a month later. Those few minutes were agonising! The difference in that month was amazing, went from a tiny pip to a clearly visible baby! I now have an 18 month old daughter.

Obviously mine couldn't be helped as my dates were wonky, but scanning that early as choice seems to cause more worry than reassurance! Try not to stress OP, put your feet up and unless anything physical gives you cause for concern then don't worry about it. Look forward to your next scan when hopefully you'll see your little twelve week baby flipping around in there!

Hi ladies, just to update those who were kind enough to reassure me last week - I had a scan at the EPU this morning, and they confirmed that I had got my dates slightly skee-wif, and am just 7 weeks pregnant now. Managed to see a wee heartbeat, so feeling on top of the world today!

Thanks again for your positive words, the last week would have been a lot rougher without knowing people had been in the same position with a happy outcome.
