Do I really need a Moses basket?

If not, what else do I use whilst I'm pottering?
What do I put him down in whilst we are downstairs?

Don't fancy using his carry cot from the pram

MIL is insistent I must have one.

What do you think?

We have gone for a moses basket upstairs as his bed and a babybox (free!!) for downstairs.

furryelephant · 03/10/2017 20:20

I didn't. Had a rocker chair (fisher price infant to toddler) and she was in there downstairs. For the 5 minutes she let me put her down Grin

BlueButTrue · 03/10/2017 20:20

Sorry - Should've added that we have the SnuZpod thingy for upstairs sleeping

The purpose of the Moses basket would just be for downstairs

I used to just take the top of the snuzpod downstairs as it is really light. I used to slide it down!

Wellandtrulyoutnumbered · 03/10/2017 20:22

We used Moses basket with baby no 5 much more than any of the others. It really depends on what kind of baby you get!

dementedpixie · 03/10/2017 20:25

Never had a Moses basket. Has a crib upstairs and used carry cot bit of pram for downstairs

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 03/10/2017 20:25

If you to get one, get a second hand. There's loads of them all over FB and eBay, often for less than a tenner.

It is extremely useful to have somewhere safe to put baby down on both floors. We went for a travel cot with full bassinet downstairs. SOO useful.

Rosehyd2 · 03/10/2017 20:25

I've just bought a baby bouncer chair for downstairs as I've heard a lot of babies don't like moses baskets.

dementedpixie · 03/10/2017 20:26

Bouncer chair isn't ideal for sleeping in

Topseyt · 03/10/2017 20:26

I never had one.

I just used the pushchair downstairs, sit was suitable from birth and could lie flat.

Upstairs they were in the cot.

fatfingeredfran · 03/10/2017 20:29

We have a baby box for downstairs naps, it's fab!

Orangebird69 · 03/10/2017 20:29

Bouncer chairs are not suitable for newborns to nap in. Unless they lie flat.

Rosehyd2 · 03/10/2017 20:30

I plan to use the pram carrycot flatbed thingy for downstairs sleeping. The bouncer chair is just for popping them in temporarily at times whilst I Potter around.

welshweasel · 03/10/2017 20:32

We used a sleepyhead so no need for a Moses basket. The pram carrycot is also fine to use.

doleritedinosaur · 03/10/2017 20:32

Depends what baby is sleeping in while in your room & downstairs. I've used mine for 2 babies 6 months for each upstairs while using
Pram/baby swing downstairs.

The post who said bouncer, mine hated the bouncer.

ButtMuncher · 03/10/2017 20:32

Baby bouncers shouldn't be used all the time for newborns - they need to be as flat as possible in the early days and can restrict breathing when their heads droop.

We had a Moses basket and took it up and downstairs when required. I spent a lot of time with my son sleeping on my chest though after feeding Grin

Rosehyd2 · 03/10/2017 20:38

I've only paid £10 for the bouncer second hand but unused so I don't mind if baby doesn't use it.
I plan to buy a Sleepyhead too for napping downstairs.

Princesspinkgirl · 03/10/2017 20:40

It's handy to have something for downstairs I'm gonna get Mothercare hyde crib just for downstairs ! Its £45 in Mothercare and the chicco next to me crib for upstairs

mumofone234 · 03/10/2017 20:40

We bought a Moses basket and never really used it. Perhaps DS was particularly bad, but we weren't able to put him down much and by the point he was able to go down to sleep he was too big for it! If you've got a pram with a detachable bassinet I'd suggest trying that instead, so that you're not spending out on something you may not use. You can always buy a basket a week or two in if your baby is a champion napper. There's no reason you have to have every single item in situ before it arrives.

Meepmoop · 03/10/2017 20:42

We had a Moses basket down stairs and used it for day time naps (had separate cot upstairs).

I found it useful as when I wanted a shower I could carry the Moses basket with sleeping baby inside and put it in the bathroom

user1493413286 · 03/10/2017 20:47

My DD slept better in the cot from a young age as she likes to stretch her arms out and would hit the side of the Moses basket and wake up. During the day she slept (and still does at 5 month) in the bouncer in the lounge unless I was sleeping too. We got one that reclines tho so her head is angled straight down which I don’t think is great for them.

NapQueen · 03/10/2017 20:48

We had a crib in the bedroom and a tiny love 3 in 1 Napper for the living room. Both lasted to 8 months. No way would a moses basket have lasted that long.

Mumof217 · 03/10/2017 20:55

Had one but it didnt get use for either of mine. Second baby was a nightmare wouldnt let me put him down so brought a swing and if he wasnt being held would be in there or pushed in pram. At night had a cot where it raised high and he hardly slept in that either normally with me

Hatstand · 03/10/2017 21:14

We have a baby box and the carry cot from the pram. DD is currently in the box because she has decided she hates her crib this evening - always useful to have options!

Lozmatoz · 03/10/2017 21:21

You don’t need one, stick him on the sofa with a couple of cushions do he doesn’t roll
