Do I really need a Moses basket?

If not, what else do I use whilst I'm pottering?
What do I put him down in whilst we are downstairs?

Don't fancy using his carry cot from the pram

MIL is insistent I must have one.

What do you think?

Why aren't you keen on using the carrycot?

dementedpixie · 03/10/2017 21:23

I disagree with using the sofa and cushions. Not safe at all

Helbelle75 · 03/10/2017 21:30

We have a next to me upstairs and a Moses basket for naps. Except she much prefers to nap on me, so not been used an awful lot.

NanooCov · 03/10/2017 21:55

With DS1 we had the snuzpod upstairs and downstairs I used a Sleepyhead either on the couch or the floor. DS2 is due in about 6 weeks and I have bought a second hand Moses as I wanted something more robust to keep curious DS1 from poking his brother. DS1 also has a visual impairment so there’s a small risk that if the baby is just in the Sleepyhead on the floor he might be accident stepped on 😄

I generally used the pram carrycot downstairs when baby was 2 months old I had handed down to me a chicco rocking chair that's a bit ugly but lies completely flat so fine for daytime naps.

BlueButTrue · 03/10/2017 23:57

We used a sleepyhead so no need for a Moses basket

I have one of these in baby's SnuzPod, but it's basically an inflated pillow. How does it replace a Moses basket?

No, with our first we used the stupid thing once for about 20 minutes. It was a hassle and she hated it anyway (that the the only time I could ever get her to sleep in it). We gave it away and don't plan to use on for #2.

Most of the time at home, I used a wrap so I could get on with things around the house without worrying about her. Sometimes she slept in her swing. Otherwise we were out nearly all day so she slept in the car on the drive there or in the pushchair.

Topsyloulou · 04/10/2017 09:22

We've got a crib for upstairs & a Moses basket for downstairs. DS used it lots but grew out of it at 8 weeks as he was so long so he either napped in the bouncer fully laid back or in his crib & I pottered around upstairs. Hoping baby will last a bit longer in it this time as I think it will be safer for her in there than on the floor with DS running around!

Cracklesfire · 04/10/2017 09:27

We had a bean bag pod thing and later the playmat. DS took all his naps on me until he went upstairs into cot at 6 months so the Moses basket was redundant through the day.

Rinceoir · 04/10/2017 09:28

We had a bedside cot and just used the pram/carrycot downstairs. It was fine.

welshweasel · 04/10/2017 09:29

blue during the day we took it out of the snuzpod and brought it downstairs with us. DS slept in it wherever we were (obviously this only works until they are mobile!) - we just put in on the floor or on the sofa next to us. It worked brilliantly as I used to go to bed after feeding him at 9ish then DH would give him a bottle when he next woke (midnight ish), settle him back in the sleepyhead and carry him up asleep and place the sleepyhead in the snuzpod. Often I wouldn't wake at all so would have had 6 hours sleep by the 3am feed.

With DD we just took the Moses basket upstairs with us at night and brought it down during the day. DD was a very long baby so we soon got a crib for upstairs and used her MB downstairs until she wouldn't fit in it anymore. Don't forget they'll sleep in their bouncers/chairs aswell. When they're tiny they wont roll off a sofa, or might like to cuddle with you.

BikeRunSki · 04/10/2017 09:32

We had one, because we were given it, but DS grew out of it in 4 weeks, and DD in 8!

We used a travel cot and probably carry cot otherwise.

n0ne · 04/10/2017 09:34

Do you have a feeding pillow? And a changing cushion with cover? A midwife showed me, if you put the changing cushion cover over the feeding pillow, it becomes an instant bed for a newborn. Genius!

I didn't have one when dd was born but it was literally the tiniest flat ever! In our one room, the Cot and the main room was held in the buggy or the swinging chair. I might get one this time around though.

ladypie21 · 04/10/2017 09:42

I never had one. I used a travel cot downstairs untill they started napping properly In the cot upstairs. They went straight into the cot upstairs at night-time. I had big babies so would have had less than a months use of a Moses basket!!

2014newme · 04/10/2017 09:43

Bouncy chairs aren't suitable as newborns need to lie flat.

Mummyme87 · 04/10/2017 09:45

Pram carrycot, baby bouncer, on a blanket on the floor....

4evernamechanging · 04/10/2017 09:45

2014 good point, ours reclined and laid flat.
Make sure yours does if you let baby sleep in it

RedBlackberries · 04/10/2017 09:45

2014 really? Is that the same for those gentle swinging chairs where they're lying back?

tinygirlsmum · 04/10/2017 09:46

We had a snuzpod and just took the top off to bring downstairs during the day. Worked well for us

2014newme · 04/10/2017 09:47

No idea you'll need to ask your midwife or health visitor.
This is why newborns can't travel in a car for more than half an hour at a time and why newborn prams and buggies have to lie flat. It's for their lung development.
If you Google the product you're taking about it should surely say from what age it's suitable e. Get from birth or from 3 months.

4evernamechanging · 04/10/2017 09:50

I think it's for their necks red if baby isn't laid back their heads lean on their chests and can drastically reduce baby's airflow. As long as they're laid back and their head is resting on whatever they're laying in and not supported by their chest/shoulders they're fine

RedBlackberries · 04/10/2017 09:55

Ah that makes sense. I was always super paranoid about my fist dd stopping breathing so I'm sure I was always adjusting her in there.

ladypie21 · 04/10/2017 10:02

Should have said, I used the Graco travel got with bassinet insert so the baby is high up. It also has a changing table attachment and was a brilliant piece of kit that gets years of use, especially if you plan on staying over with friends and family.
