Early pregnancy bleeding

Hi, I'm 6 weeks pregnant with my first baby and yesterday for a couple of hours at work I had really bad cramps and sharp pains, it eased off and was just a dull ache.
I woke this morning with the same dull ache and had some blood after going to the toilet. It was a few wipes (not bright red blood) and nothing else since. I have spoken to NHS line as it was before the doctors opened and they were worried about the cramping and have said I need to be seen by doctor or a&e. Doctors have been great and booked me an appointment for a couple of hours time. I still have the full ache, feels a bit like I am due on. I'm thinking the worst and already feel devastated, does this sound like a miscarriage? Does anyone know how much blood i should expect at 6weeks pregnant if I had miscarried?

Try not to worry, but can you ring your hospital triage, they might get you in for an early scan to make sure everythings OK. Cramps and spotting are absolutely normal in early pregnancy but stress won't help anything. Put your mind at rest and ring your hospital xx

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have a doctors appointment shortly so hoping if they are worried that they will send me for a scan.
As it's my first I'm not sure what is and isn't normal and it's all very daunting xx

Sorry you're going through this. Are they seeing you at the EPU? They should be (actually, in the future, I would call the EPU, the Early Pregnancy Unit, directly and speak to a midwife there, they are usually wonderful and they'll get you in quickly). They should offer you a scan. It could be nothing, but I would prepare yourself that the news may not be good or you want come away not knowing anything and they'll want you to come back in a week to check and see if there is any change. At that stage it's often hard to know if baby is doing okay unless you can chart their growth from one visit to the next. If you had a miscarriage, you would know. It's incredibly painful and even at 6 weeks there is usually a lot of blood. Fingers crossed for you. Bleeding in early pregnancy is completely normal in most cases. I've had it in all of my healthy pregnancies (quite heavy bleeding actually), but they will be more concerned with pain as you shouldn't be in pain, so they'll want to check and make sure everything is okay. Fingers crossed for you.

Thank you, I am thinking the worst but trying not too.
As this is my first pregnancy I wasn't sure who to call etc and the NHS emergency line told me to speak to the doctor so hopefully they will send me on if they think I should.
I haven't had anymore bleeding so I am trying to stay positive but as you say it's the cramps that I'm worried about x

Cramps can be normal 😊 my two pregnancies I had awful cramping like period pain and its just your uterus expanding. Let us know how you get on, will be thinking of you! Xx

I ha a very similar thing early on in both pregnancies - had early scans at about 8 weeks which showed perfectly healthy babies both times.
Try not to worry yourself. Spotting and cramping can be entirely normal

I’ve had two pregnancies with early bleeding in both. In my experience the EPU don’t like you contacting them directly so you have done the right thing getting a doctors appointment. They will probably refer you for a scan anyway.

Unfortunately one of my pregnancies ended in miscarriage (but this wasn’t related to the early bleeding I experienced) but in my second pregnancy I had three episodes of bleeding throughout the pregnancy and my LO is 5 months old and currently asleep on my lap so don’t assume the worst xx

Thank you all, I have told very few people so it's really nice to be able to come on here and chat. I've been reading up on here the last few weeks but my first post and it's really lovely to get all your responses.
I will let you know how I got on and will try not to worry for now x

I had bleeding in both pregnancies at 7/8 weeks then in my 2nd pregnancy again at 13 weeks which I was sure was a miscarriage. But both pregnancies resulted in full term healthy babies and the cause of bleeding never established.

It's hard not to worry but don't assume the worst. Things might still be fine. Good luck.

Hi, I've seen the doctor that has said it could be a normal episode or could be the sign of a miscarriage. He asked me to go home, take a test and ring back with the results which I have done. The test was positive but I've read that these can be for weeks. They are booking me in for a scan so I am waiting to find out when that will be. Doctor has said he will ring me back.

They should get you in urgently for a scan. If not, ring the EPU yourself and tell them you are having bleeding and cramps. Or if you can't find their number, ring the midwife team at your local hospital. It doesn't matter if you've booked in/seen them yet. With both of my pregnancies with early bleeding (one was mc, one was my current one, I'm 21 weeks and perfectly healthy, just had a few weeks of bleeding that's all), I went through the midwives at the hospital when I started to bleed. They were lovely and got me in the next morning both times. Usually they should get you in within 24 hours, 48 hours at the latest if they are really busy.

Your doctor sounds like a moron to be honest. Yes, you're right, of course, a test will be positive because you're pregnant. You haven't had a mc at this point, so of course it will be. They can also stay positive for about a month or so after the mc, so not a reliable indicator of how things are going, which you know. Keep pushing them to get in for that scan as they should be able to get you in quickly. And just rest and take it easy.

I have a scan for 8.40 on Thursday so only really a day and a half away. He has told me to rest until then...so early on in pregnancy I am having to take time off work and get help with my horse. I'm just praying that there will be no more blood and no more pain but still pregnancy symptoms. All I can do is rest and wait I guess.
I'm new to the doctors to so I don't have any relationship with a doctor there but he did ring me straight back as he said he would so that's one thing.

I've woken this morning with the usual morning sickness feeling so I am keeping positive.
No more bleeding or cramping so hoping that's also a good sign.
Trying to stay positive until tomorrow x

Hi all, just wanted to say thank you for your messages. Little bump is all good, we saw the heartbeat and It's around the right size for the time we are. It's been a horrible couple of days but now I can get on and enjoy the pregnancy.
Had horrible morning sickness today so think I'm people told bumps still there :) x

I agree. Try not to stress yourself too much to thinking negative things. Anything that worries you wouldn't help. I'm glad though that everything is fine! :)
