Black poop

Anyone had funny coloured poop?

My bloodwork said I was coming up as anemic at my 26wk appointment so I've started taking my pregnacare suppliments again and my poo is like a really weird green/black.

I've been googling and some say this is normal with anemia and iron and I shouldn't be too worried. I have a doctor's appointment this week and my 28 weekly so I can mention it but do you reckon it's something serious? Not really sure to make of it Hmm

Sounds like the result of iron supplements to me. Do mention it, but don't worry about it.

I had this with iron tablets too. The Dr said it's a perfectly normal side effect.

I had iron tablets post partum and mine were black. I rang 111 to check it was normal and it was. Also came with severe constipation so make sure you're getting lots of fibre. I started taking it with orange juice which normally has the opposite effect on me so balanced and has the side bonus of helping the iron get absorbed.

Ah thank you everyone! I will of course mention it but I'm glad it's nothing to panic over Smile
Everything is going normally more or less and I don't have any bowel type pain but you can never be too careful I guess pregnancy is such a worrying time!

Iron tablets! Happens to me when they give me them in pregnancy!

Hairgician · 03/10/2017 10:56

Yup it's the iron sups. I've read somewhere that's a sign it's been absorbed properly, not sure if correct though.

Yeah it’s the iron tablets, I had the same 🤢

Iron makes your stools like this. I had this in my first pregnancy due to iron tablets.

Some iron supplements are really hard on the guts. Check out which type you've been given. GPs often prescribe ferrous sulphate, as it is really cheap but some people find this really hard on their guts, makes them a bit constipated and they get tarry black poo. You could ask the GP to try you on ferrous gluconate or ferrous fumerate - or even buy them yourself.

Other options are ferrous citrate or chelated iron bisglycinate.

Yep, very much so! Taking 2 iron tablets a day which is the culprit.
