Hi all,

I had my first membrane sweep done today at 40+4, and was just wondering if anyone could help decipher my notes?

Cervix midway/particially effaced.
1cm dilated.
Station -2

Thanks.

Your cervix moves from backwards facing to forward facing prior to birth so midway probably means it's not yet forward facing but on its way! It also shortens in length so partially effaced means it's started shortening but it's not fully yet. I'm not sure what station - 2 means.

Good luck!

Cervix midway/particially effaced = your cervix is midway between being posterior and anterior (you want it to come all the way forward to anterior so it's on its way)/ partially effaced means its starting to thin. It starts off long and thick like a tube and has to become paper thin to dilate properly.
1cm dilated- your cervix admits a fingertip so is starting to open.
Station -2 - the baby's head is 2cm above the ischial spines of the pelvis. This is relatively high but what is pretty normal early on in labour. -3 would be high or almost free of the pelvis.

All sounds normal and promising. good luck!

Just like to give you a small update, membrane sweep worked as I went into labour at 2:30am, and had my little boy at 5:55am. Smile
