Hey, I'm booked im for a sweep at 38+3 with my first baby and i'm not massively optomistic about it doing anything.

Did anyone else have the same and what was the result?

I had 3 sweeps and they were no help so I won't have them with my second baby. However they have helped some people!

I had one with my first at 39 weeks and it didn't work for me.

OrangeJulius · 29/09/2017 12:29

I had several at 38+5, because I was about to be induced. They didn't work, even the hormones took days to produce any effect, I think my body just wasn't ready.

I am 36 weeks with my second and I will refuse any sweeps this time, as I don't think they work and I found them pretty horrible.

I had a sweep on Tues at 39+2. The midwife said it was really favourable and she would expect it to happen any time. I got excited and made childcare arrangements etc. 3 days later and I'm still here with no signs...

Ive had two that have failed. I am now 40+6. But they do work for some! Fingers crossed for you xx

They don't work if your body isn't ready. If your body is ready they only shave a day or two off your pregnancy. Depends how fed up you are!

Disclaimer: I haven't had a sweep despite midwives constant offering but my mother is a midwife.

Bluerose27 · 29/09/2017 13:02

Why are you having a sweep before 40 weeks? Is that how it usually goes? (I'm just at 38 weeks and nobody has mentioned anything . Am I missing out?! Grin )

KarateKitten · 29/09/2017 13:03

Don't bother. Sweeps do nothing if you're not pretty much ready to go. I don't know why they'd even try st 38 weeks unless like another poster you are being induced and it's the first (useless) step of that process.

Opheliasgoldenwine · 29/09/2017 13:32

Pretty much the same as @OrangeJulius.

I had them with my first and they helped, I was 4 days overdue though.

Tried many times with 2nd baby and failed as cervix was too far back and non favourable. Ended up in induction at 42 weeks.
