Colds during pregnancy

This is crap, have a fever, shivering constantly despite warm house/massive jumper, sore throat, cough, aching muscles. Am 26weeks pregnant. Pharmacist suggested paracetamol and strepsils. Not really helping. Anyone got any suggestions?! DS (2) has similar but seems to be more of a trooper than me as he is fine once he's had calpol.

My secret weapon is lemon and ginger tea.... a LOT of ginger! I usually get a big section of root ginger, about 10 lemons, fill a bowl with boiling water and slice and squeeze the lemons in (and then throw in whats left of the lemons), then grate all the ginger in, mix, cover and let stew. Pour a cup at a time and add some honey (ideally Manuka honey) and some sugar if you wish. It's absolute magic! It radiates your insides and kills everything on your throat. All I can really suggest other than that is a warm bath (not too warm etc killjoy) Flowers I hope you feel better soon Smile

I'm just coming to the end of my 3rd cold in this pregnancy (32 weeks) and I also recommend lemon and ginger tea with honey. Vicks rub on my back also helped for a while and to help clear my sinuses I ate some really spicy chicken and breathed in some albas oil drops in hot water. The fumes were good at clearing my nose.
To be fair though, the chicken was an accident. DH cooked some that we'd got from Aldi and we didn't realise how spicy they'd actually be...

Are you sure it's a cold and not flu? Colds tend to give you a stuffy head whilst flu makes you feverish and achy. It might be worth checking with your GP as flu in pregnancy can be quite serious (hence why they offer the flu jab).

I'm currently suffering with a cold mind you, and there's a saline spray you can get in boots suitable for pregnant women which helps your sinuses.

Had flu jab booked for tomorrow- typical! Just spoken to maternity assessment as my movements have been reduced for a few hours, but they are back to normal now. Not sure if baby is responding to my fever. Have only had flu once and I don't think I'm ill enough for it to be that, thinking bad cold is more likely but will keep an eye on things!

See your GP, I was struggling with a cold during pregnancy and I wasn;t getting any better. turns out I had chest infection and needed antibiotics for a week.I was about 26 week then.

A clove of raw garlic rubbed on toast, no butter. Keeps colds at bay, as well.

aching muscles always makes me think flu as I never get that with colds - worth a trip to the dr if you feel you are suffering?

I suffered head colds first 15-20 weeks, I took vitamins c & d and helped a lot.

I had a cold around 18 weeks and getting another one now!! I got through it with hot water and cut up lemons to soothe my throat and just waited it out. It's awful because I've always been the type to run down the shop and buy tons of cold and flu tablets.
I took paracetomol before bed to soothe my aches and throat but ultimately just paracetomol / hot drinks and taking it easy keeping warm and rested. Its awful but it will pass soon

I always get aching muscles with colds, you wouldn't be posting online if you had 'flu!

Paracetamol and a hot honey and lemon are about it sadly 🤕

An old vet of all people once told me that;

A cold will last a week if you treat it and Severn days if you don't!.

However if there's anything that makes you feel better in the meantime then lots of that is good for you!.

I've got it too Sad am also 27 weeks. My 2 yr old shook it off in a couple of days but still dragging for me - it seems to shift its focus around through the day from head to throat to chest and back again. I guess because our immune systems are weakened it just hits harder. I'm on hot lemon and honey and lots of rest, although fresh air seems to help so little trips out as well.

Viks first defence nasal spray! I recommend it to anyone and everyone anyway as I think it really works and your allowed it whilst pregnant!!
