Dating scan: when?

This is my/our first. I could be anywhere between 9 and 5 weeks (plus a few days) pregnant, and my GP has promised to arrange a dating scan.

My cycle is irregular, and the last bleed (which would give the 5 weeks result) was both much shorter (3 days in total) and much lighter (i.e. really not much at all) than is normal for me. The cycle before that was 47 days long.

This 'not knowing' is getting to me in the worst way. Does anyone have a rule-of-thumb for when a dating scan would be carried out?

I had mine around 12 weeks, which was estimated from my last period. HTH.

Patience. Must keep working on that!

Hi thelady, I too have quite irregular cycles and wasn't sure of my dates. I had a dating scan which put me (at the time) at 7 weeks 1 day. I wasn't sure whether I was further on. I wanted to have the dating scan as early as poss so that I could be sure that I was having my Nuchal scan at the right time. Hope that's helpful... good luck

Hopeitwontbebig: I don't think I'll get a choice of when it's done on the NHS, and there are no private providers anywhere near here....

Do you mean Nuchal or dating? I couldn't get Nuchal on NHS in my area, but got dating on NHS. From what I've read most GPs are happy to refer you to an EPU for a dating scan as soon as one is available. Is your doc nice?

My GP is lovely, the local gynae is awful (misogynistic woman). My GP promised to refer me, but that was on Tuesday after a positive confirmatory test, and I've heard nothing. Just want to know when to start nagging, I guess!

I had my booking in appointment with my mw at 10 weeks (going by my last period) and she phoned the hospital to arrange my dating scan there and then, which was at 12 weeks.

Have you seen your mw yet?

thelady · 05/04/2007 23:29

Nope - GP asked me to bring in a urine sample for confirmation, and phone for result. Nothing about what to do/not do, when to expect mw appt or anything. That said, I think she was as shocked as we were after more than 3 years of ttc!!

I had my MW/booking app at 8 wks and MW booked my scan for 10 days later, as we (derby) have our dating scan at 10wks!

BabyMadwithBump: thanks for the info. Guess I will just have to phone next week and find out when they do dating scans at the local hospital.
