Hi

I'm new!! well I have been using Mumsnet for yonks since I suffered a miscarriage with my first pregnancy in November 2005. Anyway I am now 36 weeks pregnant and really need some help choosing a girls name. I have an unusual surname and therefore am particularly concerned that I don't saddle the baby with a name that could be embarassing etc in the future.

The name we really like is Maisie. The only problem is that my friend who is a primary school teacher has mentioned the character Maisy Mouse which is apparently very popular at the moment - do you think this would be embarassing for my daughter when she reaches school age??

Any comments would be gratefully received.

I think it's pretty and if you like it, go for it. Lots of children's names are associated with characters - I've got a Henry and there's a series of books called "Horrid Henry"!

I would have thought having the same name as a popular character would have been good, not bad...

Congrats and good luck - not long to go!

Thanks LittleEasterLapin for your help!! Much appreciated. Am counting down the days now and am hoping for an earlier rather than later 'delivery'.

I know quite a lot of Masiy's and they are all lovely.

The name is beautiful, and if you like it that's all that matters.

I don't think it is an embarassing name, it's cute!

Good luck for the next couple of weeks - get some sleep in the bank now!!

Thanks - I feel more confident about the choice now - and I think that spelling it Maisy as opposed the Maisie is probably nicer. Glad there are a few of them around as I've never met a Maisy!and with my surname I didn't want to fret about not giving her one of the more popular names.

Don't think Maisy's even on television anymore - but it wouldn't bother me even if she were. I like Maisy/Maisie but wont be able to use it with our surname because it almost rhymes with it.

JoanCrawford · 05/04/2007 18:46

Go with Maisie, it's lovely. There are so many characters out there with nice names that you'd be hard pressed to find a name that doesn't appear in books or tv.

That's settled then - thanks everyone for your help!!
