Your mum's labour vs yours

Hi all

I've just been talking to my mum about her labour - I was her first and came at 38 weeks after a straightforward and fairly short labour. Is it too optimistic to think there's some kind of genetic link and my experience might be similar?

For those of you who already have DC, what were your experiences vs other female relatives?

Yes mine were like mums and my nans. Although we might be just lucky? X

I believe I've heard before that your own mum's experience is a good guide as to how your own labour will be (obviously barring any additional factors, like if you're on medication that affects things). My first was similar, although DS was born earlier than me (my mum's first). My second was a good bit quicker than when my mum had my sister, but my sister was pretty big.

Ditsy1980 · 16/09/2017 17:26

When I was pregnant I was asked about my Mam's pregnancy and labour with me by a midwife as apparently there is a genetic link or something.
Not that I saw it, I was born 3 weeks early, tiny and my Mam went home next day. DD was 2 weeks overdue, huge and I nearly died.
Each Labour is different but I guess you could be pre-disposed to high BP or other issues.

Watto1 · 16/09/2017 17:28

Mum popped dsis and I out with ease. She says she has had worse period pain. Longest labour was 3 hours from start to finish.

I had 18 hours of labour culminating in an emergency section. Dsis had a similar experience with both her dc. So neither of us inherited mum's birthing ability unfortunately!

BarryTheKestrel · 16/09/2017 17:29

I am an only. I was born 7 weeks early, with a very quick labour with no intervention. My DD was 10 days overdue with a very slow 39 hour labour ending in a forceps delivery in theatre.

Perfectly1mperfect · 16/09/2017 17:29

My mum had 'easy' and quick labours.

My first was very long and difficult. My second was quicker and more text book but I had complications after and was rushed to theatre.

My nan had difficult labours though. I hope my own daughter follows my mum, her nan.

Mrsknackered · 16/09/2017 17:29

My mums have all been labours of less than 6 hours, no tearing, no pain relief, the most overdue was by 5 days and home the same day (and all babies over 9lb 8oz)

Mine have both been inductions after one was 15 days over and the second was induced at 39 weeks as they thought there was an issue. 1st was 30 hours, second was 10. The first requiring a lot of stitching. Both were significantly smaller than our running history of big baby's in the family.
That being said, mum's and Grandma's were very similar so I'm just the difficult one!

FlaviaAlbia · 16/09/2017 17:30

Very different here. My mum had a very long labour with her first and had to be included early with pre-eclampsia, my first was about 5hrs and I went overdue but I wasn't induced.

Tentativesteps133 · 16/09/2017 17:30

Oh no Ditsy & Watto sorry to hear you had a harder time of it! Damn, was hoping it would be a case of like mother, like daughter lol.

I hoped this before I had my DS.

My mum had 5 children. All short labours, no complications.

My labour lasted four days and ended in a emergency section & both baby and I with sepsis.

mumofone234 · 16/09/2017 17:32

My mum had quite fast and easy labours, and my own labour was fast and easy.

Mrsknackered · 16/09/2017 17:33

That being said my great grandmother died during childbirth with my grandma and her twin sister so it hasn't all been plain sailing for the previous generations!

WillowtheWasp · 16/09/2017 17:33

I was born very quickly at home, delivered by my Dad, my DD had the same!

AutumnGlitterBall · 16/09/2017 17:40

My mum was 26 hours with me: two weeks late, pre-eclampsia, epidural, forceps, a dozen stitches. She's still a little jealous of my ten hour labour (three hours active) on my due date. I ended up with a third degree tear due to a shoulder dystocia, mind you, but at least it was quick.

reallyanotherone · 16/09/2017 17:43

Yeah. I actually bought into this facepalm, shoul have learned not to listen to my mum years ago. Apparently all babies in our family are late, and at least 8lb, nearer 10, and some have been 11. All were born with a two hour labour Hmm

First was a very fast emergency section. 2 weeks early, 7lb. So there was i not having mat leave booked for another 3 weeks, nothing ready, no pram or car seat, only 0-3m clothes which were all huge. When dh phoned about the section my mum stormed up to the hospital as she thought i was dying, because "that just doesn't happen in our family".

My sister had a 10 hour, textbook, 1cm an hour labour. Bang on due date, 7.5lb. 2 hours after dsis had gone down to the labour ward, mother was phoning me in a panic saying we should have heard by now, labour is only a couple of hours, and if we hadn't heard something must have gone terribly wrong, because "this just doesn't happen in our family".

Bloody convincing she was, and she really honestly believes labour should be 2 hours max. Don't know whether i was more barking letting her convince me too..

Yes both of my pregnancies and my first labour (had to be induced due to specific medical issue with dc2) were relatively straight forward like my DM's. The midwife told me there is a link in her opinion.

Tentativesteps133 · 16/09/2017 17:55

So it's looking about 50:50 between a very similar experience and the complete opposite!! Hmmm seems that you get what you're given (which I knew deep down)

My labour with DS was similar to my mum's. Both my brother & I were 2 weeks late, well over 9lb & delivered by emcs due to failure to progress & dipping heart rate. DS was 2 weeks late, 9lb9 & delivered by emcs due to failure to proceed & dipping heart rate. This time round I'm taking no chances & having elcs.

bakingcupcakes · 16/09/2017 18:12

My mum had me 10 days late by emergency CS - no signs of labour. I had DS 15 days late, vaginal birth. Active labour was 4 hours but lead up lasted 2 days.

bakingcupcakes · 16/09/2017 18:13

Considering lateness, I was 9lb8 10 days overdue, DS was 7lb2 at 15 days late so not similar at all really!

StylishDuck · 16/09/2017 18:24

My mum's 1st labour with me: induction, long labour, epidural, forceps, 7lb baby

My 1st labour: induction (albeit for a different reason), long labour, epidural, forceps, 7lb baby

My mum's 2nd labour with DB: quick labour, no pain relief, 10lb baby

I'm due my 2nd in the new year and I'm hoping it follows the same pattern! I wouldn't even mind the 10lb bit if it was quick Grin

Dreams16 · 16/09/2017 18:29

No mine certainly wasn't like my mums she went into natural labour with both me he first and my brother.
I sadly had to be induced so was 42 weeks and ended up in hospital 5 days before my DS was born which resulted in a very long and painful labour and forceps delivery in the end so I sadly didn't have the luck of having similar labour as my own mum

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 16/09/2017 18:32

The only similarities between my first labour & my mum's with me is that they both started with srom (well mine was classed as sprom) & we were similar gestations, I was 36+5 (dc arrived at 37) she was 37+4.

Grimmfebruary · 16/09/2017 18:32

Im waiting to test this theory, my mum had 2 planned c-sections Ruth me and my sister and an emergency section with my brother. She had pre eclampsia in her first two pregnancies. Extreme morning sickness with her second.

So far I've breezed along bring tediously normal but as I'm only half way I'm interested to see what happens next!
