Your mum's labour vs yours

Hi all

I've just been talking to my mum about her labour - I was her first and came at 38 weeks after a straightforward and fairly short labour. Is it too optimistic to think there's some kind of genetic link and my experience might be similar?

For those of you who already have DC, what were your experiences vs other female relatives?

My mum had 4 fast and uncomplicated labours, my sister has had 2 and I've had one, hoping for #2 in a few months! Hopefully the luck hasn't run out.

My labours were nothing like my mum's, I was hoping they would be.
My mum had my elder brothers within the space of 4 -5 hours that was from start to finish. With me she went a little longer and her waters didn't break like they did with my brothers her slight contractions started at 8 in the morning but weren't close together she then went in a 4pm and had me by 6pm. Birth was fine no complications.
She went a few days early with my brothers and a few days with me.
In my labour I went over with both mine ds was 3 days late and I was in labour for those three days with contractions every 3-6 mins, I could feel everyone of the little buggers and I wasn't even dialated kept getting sent back home from the hospital. Waters trickled out so no gush. Birth went ok had back labour and just had gas and air and a few internal stitches.

With my dd everything was different I was anemic and had bad SPD.
I was 2 weeks over due so had numerous sweeps that didn't work and was due to be induced. Went in to be induced and was told that I was contracting already so was left to it to progress. Full contractions started at 6.30pm and I had my dd at 10:33pm. Labour was far worse than with my ds the pain was front and back labour had gas and air and pethidine waters burst not long before I gave birth but midwives said they thought my waters had already gone. Fun didn't stop there my placenta didn't come out so I had to be put on the drip to increase contractions but that didn't work, so I then had to go to theatre to have it removed however i had eaten so they couldn't put me out for it so I had to have an epidural so i was awake whilst the doctor had his hand up my foo foo removing the placenta etc. I was terrified I said for both births no drip and no epidural but I had it all after the birth, I could of done with the epidural in labour. Plus side I was cleaned out so didn't bleed as much and they stitched me up whilst they were down there. With my son i had to have gas and air whilst being stitched up and that stung worse than the ring of fire Grin

So not only were they different to my mum's they were both different labours in themselves.

It's all worth it in the end

My mum's four labour experiences all sound very positive. She gave birth quickly with gas and air only. I think she had a few episiotomies.

My own birth experience was horrible (the pain was horrific). However, it was relatively quick (seven hours). I needed ventouse and episiotomy. A few weeks later I ended up with an agonising pelvic inflammation that left me almost immobile.

Neither of us got stretch marks though Confused

Expectingbsbunumber2 · 16/09/2017 19:26

Mine was the same as my mums. Hoping this one will be totally different

soundsystem · 16/09/2017 19:30

Yep, similar here.

My mum's first labour: 6 hours from start to finish, G&A only, and she drove herself to hospital in the early stages of labour!

My first labour: 4 hours start to finish, TENS machine only for pain relief. Home birth so no need to drive myself anywhere!

Good luck!

I was born at home one April. My mum said the whole thing was beautiful. The room was full of flowers and they watched tele between contractions.

user1499786242 · 16/09/2017 20:19

My mum takes great pleasure in telling everyone who will listen about how her down below 'looked like a map' with such horrific tearing and stitches...
Didn't happen to me!
It's easier said than done but there really is no point in worrying about something you have absolutely no control over!
Some labours are ok, some aren't!
What's most important is that baby AND you are ok, and well supported and looked after!
Good luck Hun

Mine and my mum's were very different: I've had 3 straightforward vaginal deliveries, no forceps or ventouse, home in maximum 12 hours, one stitch total between three 8lb+ babies.

My mum had an emergency section, two planned sections and a post partum haemorrhage each time Confused

Very similar to my Mum's as they were very fast.

DramaAlpaca · 16/09/2017 20:39

My mum had a CS with me because I was breech and an induced VBAC with my sibling.

I had three straightforward normal deliveries.

AmaDablam · 16/09/2017 20:47

I was born at 39 weeks, 9 hour labour, no complications. Mum had an episiotomy which I believe was more common in those days (late 70s). Dd was born at 41+3, 7 hour labour, no complications though I did have a 3rd degree tear, which needed surgical repair after. So fairly similar I'd say, other than the lateness. That seems to have come from DH's side - he and his 2 siblings were all also 10 days late. Not sure if that's a thing though, probably just coincidence!

shhhfastasleep · 16/09/2017 20:58

I was No.3 for my late Mum. Born at home. She lit up a fag after I was born.

kathrynelizabeth3005 · 16/09/2017 21:26

If there is a genetic link, I unfortunately didn't get the right genes from my mum!!

I was her first baby and a very straightforward labour. Her waters going at 39+5 was the first sign at around 10pm, and I was born the following day at noon. She had an easy time, just used gas and air and only had a small tear from my big head 😂

I on the other had had my first baby in April just gone, was having contractions for 5 full days until I ended up having my waters broken and being put on the drip as I wasn't dilating. Had all the drugs I could get my hands on and an epidural to boot, which made for a great first photo of holding DS - I look totally off my face and can't really remember much of the actual birth + about 16 hrs afterwards. In the end I had an EMCS at 41 weeks, which was 6 days (a whopping 140 hrs) after my contractions began!!

If I'm lucky enough to have a DC2 in a few years, I'd like to think I might labour like my mum did but I will probably fight for an ELCS. I couldn't cope emotionally going through everything the same way for so long for it to end up as an EMCS again.

kathrynelizabeth3005 · 16/09/2017 21:28

Should also note I was my mums only vaginal delivery as my brother and sister were a planned csection since they were twins and my brother was breech.

thismeansnothing · 16/09/2017 21:36

I was my mums first.

I was 2 weeks late. My DD was 17 days late. Neither of us were induced.

My mum was in labour nearly 24 hours. I was in labour 19 hours.

When my mum had me I was back to back. When I had dd she was back to back.

My mum managed to get me out with just gas and air. When I had dd I had the full works including an emergency section with general anaesthetic.

My mum popped my sister out no problems. My dad almost missed that one cos he was parking the car 🤣

Heartofglass12345 · 16/09/2017 21:38

My mum went 2 weeks overdue with me, i think my sisters were born around their due dates too. My sons were born at 30+4 and 33 weeks so nowhere near the same lol

Groovee · 16/09/2017 21:43

My mum and gran were in labour for days! Dd was induced due to pre-eclampsia and was 17 hours to birth with 4 hours of labour.

Ds was a longer labour of 8 hours.

TableMirror · 16/09/2017 21:48

Both me and my sibling were late, sibling was emergency C-section after 4 days of labour, both nearly died, mum didn't see sibling for 2 days as she was too sick.

My DS was born prematurely 2.5 hours after I arrived at hospital.

All very very different.

I think my maternal grandmother had quick labours.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 16/09/2017 21:54

My mum's first (my brother) very long labour (not sure how long) ending in a ventouse delivery which left him with severe bruising and he still has a little dint in one side of his head.

My first was a 12hr labour. They gave me an episiotomy but he came out before any need for any pulling.

My mum's second (me) she was in hospital for monitoring due to reduced movements at 7 and a half months. There was a fire in the hospital and she had to be evacuated through a window in a fire engine cherry picker thing. By the time they could get back in they continued monitoring and pretty much went straight to an emergency C section. A month in an incubator and then I was home.

My second. 3 hr labour and out he popped very quick and simple but then needed a week is scbu due to low sats.

MerlinsLeftButtock · 16/09/2017 23:12

My mum has had five babies. None were more than a day or so over due. And her longest labour was a mere 3 hours (me, baby #2) my labour was an induced horror that resulted in an EMCS. 1 sister had two ELCS another sister had induced labours, but were straight forward.

WaitingForEgg · 16/09/2017 23:22

My mum had pre-eclampsia requiring induction with both myself and my brother. I had pre-eclampsia and required induction at 38 weeks with DD. I do not hold much hope for any different should we have another

DeadDoorpost · 17/09/2017 00:15

My mum has had 4, me being the eldest. Labour with me was for 6 hours, sister was 7, DB1 3 hours and DB2 4 hours. All the others were easy births but mine was horrendous. Midwife pulled the placenta out, mum haemorrhaged and had to be rushed into surgery. Think she tore with my sister but don't know much else. We were all early.

I'm hoping I'm like her with regards to quick labours. Just don't want a repeat of my own birth 😂😂 I'm sure I'll find out soon enough

BewareOfTheToddler · 17/09/2017 00:23

Oh, I wish. In each case, my mum's waters broke, she went into hospital, then dilated to 10cm without feeling a contraction Hmm. Then had drip to get things going, plus epidural. Went into labour naturally x 3. No interventions bar the standard 1980s episiotomy.

My experience? Induction at 40 + 10, EMCS at 42 weeks exactly for failure to progress (ie dilate beyond 2cms.

I find interesting because we're similar in a lot of ways physically, eg age at first period. But my body and my baby were not aligned when trying to give birth.

Cheesenacho123 · 17/09/2017 00:25

My mum gave birth to me 12 weeks early and was a breech birth. I gave birth 6 days early, baby got stuck (head first) episiotomy and ventouse then things went from bad to worse for me as I had retained placenta and haemorrhaged so put under GA to have it removed. My baby was healthy and fine.

Two very different births. I thought there might be a genetic link and I'd have an early birth (I was a bit scared) but nope I went all the way. So I doubt there is a genetic link unless you have seen other family members go through it to. Like grandmas, aunties or sisters
