Early scan measuring behind

I've just had an early scan at 6+2 and whilst there was a heartbeat, it's measuring at 5 weeks. I was advised to go back for a viability scan in 2 weeks.
Has anyone got experience of everything being ok after this? Or should I face up to the very likely scenario that this baby sadly won't make it?

I wasn't sure they could see a heartbeat at 5 weeks i thought it was usually 6? But obviously I'm not a professional. Seeing a heartbeat is very positive and dates can change when bean is so small, but sadly there are never any guarantees. I had a MMC and bean got to 8+4.

Stay positive there is a heartbeat as long as there's no bleeding/cramps etc things may progress perfectly fine.

Good luck and fingers crossed. X

Don't panic too much - they're so so tiny at that stage it's so difficult to measure accurately. I had an early scan at 5+4 (dildo cam) and saw a heartbeat. The obstetrician dated me earlier as well but it was all on track again a few weeks later.

Normally a heartbeat isn't seen until 6 weeks at the earliest so if there was a healthy heartbeat, that suggests their measurements may be off, perhaps due to baby's position. However, a slow heartbeat is a bad sign. Do you know how fast the heartbeat was?

I was scanned at 6+2 after pain and bleeding. Measured to be only 5. She said my dates might of been wrong (they absolutely were not).
Long story short I'm due in 10 days. sometimes very early scans are just harder to get accurate results. And things can still turn out well.

Hope that's what happens for you 💐

Thank you everyone - especially Merida, that's good to hear, and good luck with the arrival of your baby!

And no, she didn't mention the speed of the heartbeat....

Seeing as heartbeat was seen and she didn't mention it being slow or irregular I'd be cautiously optimistic... But what a stressful wait for another scan. Hope it all works out for you.

Hi op
I've experienced this with both outcomes. First time, measuring behind, then a heartbeat, but slow growth and this ended at 8 weeks. Second time, 1st scan dated me almost 2 weeks behind, 2nd scan all normal and now I'm almost 30 weeks. My advice would be try to remain neutral. Good luck, I hope all is well.

Hi OP, I've had almost the exact same as you - i had an early scan at 6+1 & was measured at approx 5 weeks! Heart beat was seen though, and so i tried not to panic. Then had a private scan at 9+1 & was measured 8+5 which matched in exactly with my dates from ovulation. Then had 12 week scan at 12+4 & was brought forward by 5 days to 13+2! Now 18+4 & all is well. They really are tiny that early on & so measurements can and often are out. I hope you're outcome is a good one OP, best of luck!

I measured behind at my first scan with DS3, I think it was about 7 weeks. He ended up fine, I hope it's the same for your lo.
