12 week scan measured 10.5...lost and confused

This is my second baby and I am devastated and don't know what to do or think.

I had my 12 week scan today, heart beat found but baby measuring 10.5 week. I k ow with 100% certainty when conception occurred, we have a 7 month old (4.5ish months at the time) so we only found the opportunity to do it once that month!

I also had an early scan at 8 weeks where baby measured 8 weeks...so I know my dates were right :(

I've been sent away and told to re scan in 2 weeks...what does this mean, am I going to miscarry? The sonographer had a really thick accent and was really hard to understand, I just don't know what to do.

Please don't panic. I had almost the exact same situation, including early scan and sure of my dates. Due date was changed at 12 week scan by 2 weeks. DD came along naturally 2 weeks "early". I'm certain she just came on time. I didn't get rescanned until 20 weeks at which point she was measuring big!

I really hope all is OK. Scans aren't always 100% Flowers

Like the above poster, I had a dating scan which put my conception date two weeks later than it actually was. We were keeping a record of DTD at the time and I knew it was impossible for that date.

DD came out on her due date, but I maintain to this day she was two weeks late. This is backed up by my placenta being "very gritty and past it's usefulness". She was also very short despite being a very good weight of 7lbs 14oz.

I know it's very easy for us to say Don't worry, but there could be other reasons than a problem. Flowers

My ds was dated 2 weeks older at the 12 week scan than he actually was. I knew with absolute certainty when conception had happened. I think there is a normal variation in size. Incidentally, ds was huge at birth (8lb 10oz) at not quite 37 weeks.
Big at 12 weeks, big at birth.

I think heartbeat at 10werk old size is very positive. I wouldnt worry too much.

Was there a heart beat? The early scans (8 weeks etc) are not reliable at measuring / dating.

Yes there was a heartbeat. He also showed blood flow and the baby moved independently during the scan.

He was just so unreasuring and it's left me in such a state. He admitted baby was in a funny position which was the case with my first also, but he didn't really acknowledge this to be a cause of the problem.

Please don't panic; easy to say I know. I had similar with my second DS. He measured two weeks smaller than when I knew I conceived. I was devastated but he caught up and all was fine. He's now whinging in his bedroom 🙄
Scans are notoriously inaccurate with measurements early on. Having said that if you are really really worried maybe try and get a referral for a further scan or if it's viable, pay for a private one. Groupon do loads of scan deals.

Do you have a retroverted uterus? If so that can throw measurements off a lot in the first tri. Especially on abdominal ultrasound. My baby measured barely 6 weeks at the 7 week ultrasound. They then did an internal ultrasound a week later and miraculously it measured 7w6d. Since then I've had 2 more internal ultrasounds as the baby is tucked away in the very back of my extremely tilted uterus. Abdominal ultrasound can't get a good picture but internal can. I'm 14w4d now and waiting to see him again at 16w hopefully big enough to see abdominally. If you have s good heart beat etc it's likely all will be well. I certainly hope so 🍀💕🍀

Snowdog37 - yes I do have a tilted uterus, but the sonographer didn't seem to acknowledge this ( even though for all other scans with first baby it was always stated)

With my first it took 2 sonographer and a long time to get a good picture of DD, but the women were lovely a patient and very reassuring.

This time round he acknowledged immediately baby was not in a good position, but then seemed to measure once at that was that. Imo he also didn't zoom in anywhere near as much as what I am used to.

My dd is only 7 months, so I remember very clearly my scans from before and what they looked like.

I'm starting to feel like he perhaps could have been more patient and could have got a better picture and therefore a more accurate measurement.

I am going to book a private scan mid next week and hope and pray for the best.

So sorry to hear about your worry as I know it's awful but sounds like lots of positive stories here. I would definitely get a private scan if you can as it will hopefully give you the reassurance and they will spend time looking for you

Please let us know how your little one is if you do!

Just wanted to update this thread and everyone who helped reassure me.

I have had a private scan today and all looks well. Dates are still slightly out as I thought I should be 12+3 but I measured 11+5...but I'm happy with that degree of variation.

Thanks to everyone, it really helped get me through the past few days!

Excellent news! These early weeks are stressful!!! You're getting close to the second trimester now, I hope it's smoother sailing for you 😊
