toxoplasmosis worry

Hello
I am making myself paranoid because on one or two occasions I have eaten rare/pink beef .... now I keep worrying that I may have contracted toxoplasmosis and am feeling really guilty for having eaten it. I had a test at 12 week and am not immune. I ate the beef after that. Am now nearly 20 weeks, and very very anxious. I don't know why I am fixating on this .... but seriously, what are the odds on me having contracted toxoplasmosis???

The odds are tiny, really

I think that youa re jsut stressed in general..i was for both my pgs, and i work with cats, so was more stressed than usual.

I am sure that you ahve not contracted it- you can always get another test, and that will show if you have contracted toxo since your last test....but i really don't think you need to
hth and try to stay calm- i know it is hard!

Tiny, Tiny risk....

I am in France, have been tested and I am not immune either, I have a blood test every mth to check as there are very few eating rules here. It's not just the undercooked meat but in a rural area like here, we have to be vigillant about washing fresh produce.

You have to be seriously unluky to get toxo from the occassional peice of undercooked meat. I think it's also more likely from things like parma ham and completely uncooked red meat.

Have you had any symptoms? It creates a flu like effect with your body usually.

Please don't worry....

Hi
thank you for your messages.
I did have some possible "symptoms" - my throat was swollen/sore when I woke up in the morning for a few days.
I have decided to go for another test, just to put my mind at rest .... I hope I am just being silly about this, I just could not bear it if I have contracted toxoplasmosis. I have tried to be so careful with everything, and then really did not think about it when I ate rare beef fillet at a party .... and think I have also had a rare steak on another occasion... feel so stupid!
The only thing I keep telling myself is that if it was that easy to get tox off beef then presumably I would have got it ages ago ... as I do like rare beef/steak and eat a lot of it.

the chances of getting this are sooo small - I spoke to a doctor about this because I was feeling paranoid (I have cats). she had years of experience and told me she had only seen it occur once in a pregnant sheep farmer, who had contracted it through doing lots of hardcore lambing! I honestly think you'll be fine...

Madigan · 03/04/2007 16:54

thank you !!!! I know I am being paranoid ... but at the same time I just can't help it... I have "fixatd" on toxi and am now convinced I have it and have damaged my baby .... so I think I need to have the test to put my mind at rest X

i got toxo from my cats when i was a teen, their pee is the problem. thats why preg ladies need to wear gloves when handling litter and gardening.

anyway, my symptoms were big hard nodules on my throat, armpit and bikini area. you cant mistaken them, they are quite sore too.

you only had swollen throat, is that right? it doesnt sound like toxo to me.

Madigan · 03/04/2007 17:54

yes - just a swollen throat ....

Can you get it from human contact? It sounds silly I know but my boyfriend and I were in Spain recently and although I religiously avoided the crudo and other uncooked hams and Spanish meats - he ate all of them, and both of us came down with nasty sore throats and flu like symptoms.

Madigan · 03/04/2007 19:32

no I am fairly certain that you cannot get it from human contact .... just from cats and from eating raw meat and unwashed veg, and goats milk.
Madigan X

I have been a shepherd for 20yrs and have lambed 1000's of ewes with toxo, bare hands as well! I have never caught it I have also had a cat that died from toxo and I still don't have it so I think it unlikely you have had toxo.
