Hi folks
I am 11 weeks pregnant tomorrow and just went swimming in the sea. Not for very long.
Ive since read that it isnt safe to so in first trimester and now im panicking.
I cant find much info on line so i dont know what's right or wrong.
Im on holidays in portugal and scared myself. I had a miscarriage before this pregnancy and I dont have any other kids

Any help/advice would be great

Where did you read that? It's not something I've heard, I went to France with a pregnant doctor friend last year and she spent the whole week swimming in the sea. If it wasn't recommended I'm sure we would have been told be a midwife or the NHS site - try not to panic (I know it's hard)

Eh? Never heard that. I'm sure millions of pregnant people have swum in the sea.

I've read that hot baths and showers aren't good in 1st trimester so we can't win either way. That being said, you're in Portugal where I'm assuming the water is warmer than the UK so I'd say you're fine. I could understand if it was ice cold water but it's not so...
And it's not overly salty so you're fine (somewhere mentioned that really salty water isn't good for pregnant women but I don't know how true that is either. There so many 'rules' to be aware of it drives me nuts)

Rubbish - relax and enjoy your holiday

InDubiousBattle · 05/09/2017 13:25

The only issue I can see with baths/the sea is keeling over if you get too hot or too cold, given that you're out and fine I imagine you're fine!

I've never heard that. Honestly, just stick with the advice on the NHS website and from your midwife. If you follow everything you read online or people tell you you'll drive yourself crazy.

Thank you ladies. I just needed reassurance. I was only warned about hot tubs before going. Having a previous miscarriage has me worried.

I've never heard that, swimming is very good for you , and exercise can actually lower your risk of miscarriage. You're fine Smile

Hot tubs are different altogether - very hot and potentially brewing lots of bugs - now the sea in Portugal sounds just the ticket!

I had my babies 30 and 40 years ago and did and ate all the things that are now banned - they were all fine.
