Hope someone can help me. I have just discovered i am pregnant again only 9 months after having my first baby, the thing is as i am breastfeeding my periods have been very erratic and i am not sure just how far along i am! I think i am about 6 weeks but can also feel fluttering like sensations which i assume is quickening and just can't remember how soon i felt these before. Am i further along than i think??? I can't get in to see my Dr for another 3 weeks i haven't been taking folic acid or anything like that. Can anyone give me a bit of advice, as i don't want to spend the next three weeks fretting!!!!. Thank you

6 weeks is very early to feel movement. I wouldn't worry about the folic acid - just start taking it now. You could perhaps call your EPU and see if they will give you a scan to check dates, but I think you probably need to get a referral from your doctor.

The other thing is to see if your doctor's receptionist could ask the doctor to leave a form with them for you to collect for a referral for dating scan on the basis that you're feeling movements, might be further along than you thought and want a nuchal fold scan (which has a limited window).

if you want a nuchal fold scan, that is.

I know you haven't been able to see a doctor, but often if you tell the receptionist why you wanted the appointment they'll organise a MW appt and a scan for you without you needing to see the GP, which is worth a bash.

And congratulations by the way!

Sorry - I meant to say you want a nuchal fold scan because it would create some pressure for them to do something about it. You don't have to go through with the NFS if you don't want one, of course...

dont worry about not taking folic acid, just start taking it now. I think alot of us, as women, have been in your situation and as long as your start looking after yourself now it will be fine they will give you a dating scan pretty quickly if you have NO IDEA of your dates. A midwife will be able to tell if you are above 8-10 weeks by feeling your uterus btw

I think you're only supposed to take folic acid for the first 12 weeks though, so if you are feeling movements and are further along, you might be better off not taking it!

(NB Folic acid further on in pg isn't harmful, but the main benefit is before 12wks.)

folic acid helps your iron intake, so i presume thats why it is included in preg supplements that are for the whole 9 months

ShowOfHands · 03/04/2007 10:40

Sorry, didn't mean it was potentially damaging, meant that it prevents neural tube defects and after 12 weeks taking it makes no difference. By all means take it straight away just in case, but you may be quite seriously pregnancy by now and getting along to the GP or EPU might be your first priority.
