AmandaP86x · 26/08/2017 14:23

Just interested to know the reasons as to why you found out or why you didn't find out?

Currently 20 weeks pregnant and having long standing debate with DP!!!

I'd like to know people's reasons as to why or why not xxx

I didn't with first dc as back in the day they didn't tell you!!. Found out with younger ones and made a big difference imo to the older ones having a bond with the new baby, as it had a name and they could imagine a life with a db or dsis if that makes sense!!
And obvious reasons like being organised /clothes /nursery etc if you want a specific colour /style for the dc!!

Grimmfebruary · 26/08/2017 14:28

I'm going to find out with my first in a few weeks so dp's ds can get used to the idea, to help narrow down name choices and to get a room ready.

Also because I've convinced myself it's a boy and will need time to stop myself calling it 'he' 😂

thepatchworkcat · 26/08/2017 14:30

I did because I don't like waiting for surprises, I like to know things one way or the other! Helped us with knowing what gender names we needed to think of too.

Oysterbabe · 26/08/2017 14:58

We didn't with our first because we wanted to wait until the birth and have DH tell me. We did with the one I'm carrying because DH had a strong preference and he wanted to make sure he'd dealt with his feelings if it was another girl rather than feel disappointed at the birth.

We didn't. Just because there are few genuine surprises in life.

SkafaceClaw · 26/08/2017 15:17

We didn't find out with our first and my prediction was right. Loved the surprise.

Got our 20 week scan in a couple of weeks and planning to find out this time as we can then plan and either pass the more boyish clothes and make space or prepare otherwise.

Rockandrollwithit · 26/08/2017 15:17

I did purely because I wanted to know and saw no reason to wait. We found out for DC2 as well.

Just be prepared for people to offer their opinion if you find out. I'm due DS2 in a few weeks and someone actually said 'it's such a shame it's another boy' to my face. Shock

WineAndTiramisu · 26/08/2017 16:30

We're going to find out, having the harmony testing at 10 weeks, and that tells you the sex as well. I'm far too impatient to wait until the birth, plus it means I don't have to stick to buying things in yellow/green etc. But essentially it's just because I'm impatient!

IndianaMoleWoman · 26/08/2017 16:33

I found out in advance. I found childbirth in itself to be a "genuine surprise", and it's still a surprise whether you find out at 20 weeks or at the birth. Pregnancy is tough; give yourself a nice half-way treat by finding out, I say.

jmscp2015 · 26/08/2017 18:13

Because my OH wouldn't of been able to cope with not knowing - he likes to know where he is with everything lol - and I was fine either way! Smile

Merida83 · 26/08/2017 18:32

We found out because i just had had had to know, we even went at 16 weeks for private scan cos i was so desperate to know. I like to plan, to be organised and prepared. I want to have all the things bought for the right gender etc. And it helped us in long debate over names too, boys name would of been easy but a girls was proving a nightmare so thought at least if we know what it is then we can get arguing if needs be.

mummyG2C · 26/08/2017 18:33

We didn't with first and currently pregnant with second and won't again. It is the most amazing feeling at the end of it all, it made no difference with bonding with me personally and it made name choosing and buying lovely unisex bits and all the speculating was fun! It was all part of the experience for us, my sister recently had her first and found out as her husband really wanted to and she was really excited at first but then within a few hours really a bit disappointed she knew and has said absolutely will not with the second. It's a magical feeling either way but for me was all part of the fun and excitement. I wouldn't have it any other way, having my husband run round and shout there's a pink hat it's a girl and the excitement and joy on his face was incredible and an amazing memory I will never forget!

TillyTheTiger · 26/08/2017 18:38

I didn't find out because I dislike the whole pink and blue thing so I wanted to make sure that anything bought in advance would be neutral. But mainly because I love surprises!

mrsfwentworth · 26/08/2017 19:20

23 weeks here and chose not to find out at the anomaly scan. The sonographer told us that it was incredibly rare for her not to be asked the sex of the baby which surprised me.

I didn't because I know several people where the sonographer has made a mistake and I have no particular desire to dress my baby in gendered clothes as a newborn, that can wait. However, my one reason for finding out would be that I'd rather fully enjoy the excitement of finding out the gender (as this baby is likely to be our only) rather than being too exhausted/overwhelmed/in pain/just grateful that baby is (hopefully) born healthy and safe to appreciate finding out after the birth.

Thecomfortador · 26/08/2017 21:42

We found out because we just wanted to know, and could. Also, I was glad as I was telling myself there's a chance it could be a girl..of course it wasn't.... it gave me time to put that feeling to bed.

I don't really get the whole we wanted a surprise thing. You know it's going to be one or the other, hardly a surprise haha. But each to their own, of course.

Orangebird69 · 26/08/2017 21:47

I didn't want to know - I wanted the surprise. I didn't care either way what sex the baby was so didn't see the point in finding out. We knew it would be our one and only dc and wanted to save something til the end of the pregnancy.

TallulahBetty · 26/08/2017 21:47

No because our NHS trust doesn't tell you. But that suited us as we didn't want to know.

PacificDogwod · 26/08/2017 21:49

I found out all of my DSs' sex at amnio/DVS as part of a complete chromosome analysis due to me carrying a genetic issue.
The information was there and it seemed daft not to have it.

Teamkhaleesi · 27/08/2017 07:58

With DS I wanted to find out and DH didn't. It seemed more important to him than me so I agreed not too. This time round we found out in the interest of fairness. We are having a girl so all DSs gender neutral clothes will come in handy!

Lilypad78 · 27/08/2017 19:19

The first time I wanted to know & dh didn't but agreed we could find out. I really wanted to know as I'm too impatient, I like to plan & be prepared (mentally & physically) as much as I could. This time I left it to dh to decide as he let me have my own way with our first & he decided we should find out again for practical reasons as we already have all the things for a girl, but if we were expecting a boy we would need to do more shopping!

confused123456 · 28/08/2017 14:45

I'd never ever find out before the birth. I don't see the need to personally. I think it's far better to find out when your baby is right there in the room, and all being well you can hold them and cuddle them straight away, than find out at the scan, and all you have is a picture to take home.
My dh wanted to find out, I didn't. He wasn't happy at all at the time, but after the birth, he admitted I was right about not finding out, and that next time he will also be happy to wait.
We got white clothes for the hospital, and we knew that after the birth, we could go and get the rest of the stuff, and more clothes. Newborns look so much better all in white I think.

tinypop4 · 28/08/2017 14:48

I didn't either time because I didn't want to have any preconceived ideas about my child. I was worried if I knew the sex I would imagine the child that I thought I was having and it didn't want to.
I enjoyed the surprise when dd was born so didn't find out second time when I had ds. Dd didn't seem to mind that she didn't know whether she would have a brother or sister...

meltingmarshmallows · 28/08/2017 17:51

I found out at 16 Weeks, no preference or anything like that. Didn't rush out and buy pink or blue. But we just wanted to know, it's a long slog and the thought of a little sneaky bit of info about our baby was too tempting. It helped me bond with the pregnancy I'm sure and we've been able to think of names etc.

If we have another I think I wouldn't find out, so we have experienced it both ways.

MrsHandles · 29/08/2017 08:03

I don't like surprises. This comes as part of a wonderful package, along with OCD and anxiety Hmm. If I at least know the gender, I can prepare for something...anything. I had the 20 week scan a few days ago. It's a boy Grin
