Horrendous Heartburn

Heeeeylo fellow pregnant ladies Smile

Currently looking for advice/remedies with how to deal/get rid of heartburn. I'm 31 weeks on the dot today and for the past 2 weeks, I feel like my heartburn has gotten worse to the point I'm just an insufferable moo.

It feels like I've swallowed a tattie whole without chewing and it's now sitting stuck in my oesophagus whilst acid reflux ferries its way up every few minutes like a blooming tower of terror ride. I can't even burp unless I'm lying down which feels like it's gonna help get rid of the food stuck in throat feeling but instead does sweet f.a.

I think I could maybe suck it up if it wasn't constant (probably not) but the fact I'm only getting a few hours of relief before it kicks back up is testing my patience. Anyways, Rennies doesn't do much and neither does Gaviscon (except make me want to whitey).

Is there anything that you lovely ladies would recommend?

I'm not pregnant now but had this with both of mine. I found literally swigging Gaviscon did help but mainly I had to switch to eating teeny little meals. Tiny snacks all day and nothing for at least two hours before bed. Also had to limit chocolate as that really exacerbated it. Sad.

It mostly went after the birth but not entirely unfortunately. Think my oesophagus is weaker.

Ladybirdgal · 20/08/2017 19:57

@DorotheaHomeAlone oh sweet jeezus, I didn't even consider the possibility that this may continue after birth Sad. And you had to limit chocolate? That's the only thing that makes my miserable face smile these days.

I'll maybe try and persevere with the Gaviscon. Meh.

Outta curiosity, did both of yours come out with a head full of hair or were they wee baldies?

I had terrible heartburn for about 8 months before getting pregnant, and off and on during (im 28 weeks). My gp prescribed ranitidine ands peptac for me, and the combination helped. He assured me that both are fine when pregnant.

NannyPlum82 · 20/08/2017 21:51

Go to the docs and get omeprazole.

I was prescribed ranitidine in my first pregnancy but it was rubbish. Omeprazole wa s much better.

Mine is just ramping up now and has been waking me in the night the last few nights. Sticking with the Gaviscon for the moment but if it gets worse then I'm going to try some ting stronger.

And my babies were all hairy!

rainbowsandsunshine · 20/08/2017 21:57

I second omeprazole, I was prescribed it after struggling with horrendous acid reflux for weeks, to the point that I was vomiting acid and blood. Its amazing, only need one tablet every other day and I havent had heart burn since!

We1shBird · 20/08/2017 22:05

After I had my DD I had such low iron levels that I was offered a blood transfusion. No one told me that antacids can inhibit the absorption of iron. I was practically swigging Gaviscon and Maalox permanently! Just something to be aware of but your GP will be able to advise.

Ameliablue · 21/08/2017 07:55

I got ranitidine from the doctor's, although I think you can get it over the counter. Having said that the instructions do say to consult a doctor before taking of pregnant so some pharmacists may not sell it to someone who'd pregnant.

Hotpinkangel19 · 21/08/2017 10:52

Is the lump in your throat feeling constant? I've had this for 2 weeks nearly now and nothing helps, not even gaviscon 😕 can constantly feel it and the heartburn is horrible.

raviolidreaming · 21/08/2017 10:56

I got ranitidine from the doctor. Nothing else touched it.

ForgivenessIsDivine · 22/08/2017 16:15

Restrict your food until you find what is causing it.. quite likely that your baby will be intolerant to the same foods and identifying it now will make things easier when your baby arrives... i have had three and it applied to all three of them... also find a good broad spectrum dairy free probiotic and some high quality fish oils.

Uiscebeatha85 · 22/08/2017 16:18

I had horrendous heartburn. I ditched the gaviscon sachets and just swigged from the bottle in the end. Don't bother with the boots cheaper version, it's rancid. Mine went completely after DD was born.

Oh and she was born with a massive mop of jet black hair!

thatorchidmoment · 22/08/2017 16:20

Ranitidine is really effective. Take 150mg (2 standard tablets) about half an hour before bed and that should really help. You can buy it in supermarkets and it is widely used and safe in pregnancy.

If that doesn't help, omeprazole is definitely an option. Your GP should prescribe that for you but ranitidine is definitely worth a try first.

raviolidreaming · 22/08/2017 18:51

I hope your theory is just that, ForgivenessIsDivine - EVERYTHING triggered my heartburn by time I got ranitidine prescribed and even water was one of the culprits!

Lemonicelolly1 · 22/08/2017 19:02

I had horrendous heartburn from 12 weeks and I was constantly sick with reflux. Tired all the usual remedies and was swigging Gaviscon from the bottle. Went to the doctors last week at 28 weeks because I was miserable and they prescribed Omeperazol. I was worried about taking tablets during pregnancy but they assured me it was fine and me constantly vomiting was worse for the baby. Week later and I feel like a different person and haven't had heartburn since Smile
Don't suffer as long as I did with it! X

Agree, Omeprazole! It's a total game changer wonder drug. Gavisvon feels like trying to put out a forest fire with a watering can, omeprezole just stops it even burning in the first place.

BabyCute · 16/01/2018 21:24

I'm not pregnant but had a baby 4 months ago. I had a very severe heartburn for the 1st trimester and it got so bad that my Obstetrician prescribed Lanzoprazole 30 mg which did the trick and I felt relatively normal again. Make sure you take 2 spoonfuls of Gavisvon before each meal and have the chewable talets in between. Wish you the very best with your pregnancy. 👍

BabyCute · 16/01/2018 21:27

By the way my baby came out with a head full of hair and has had to have two haircuts so far. Grin

hmyh23 · 16/01/2018 23:31

Omeprazole! I suffered on with just Gaviscon and Ranitidine for months because my midwife told me the doctor would refuse to prescribe anything. Eventually got so bad the acid damaged my vocal chords and I lost my voice for a week. Bypassed the midwife, went straight to the doctor and she prescribed Omeprazole 20mg which sorted it within 2 days. I'm just gutted I suffered for so long to be honest as it was getting me down and disturbing my sleep for months.
