Just got a positive pregnancy test. We were not trying so surprise to us. We went on holiday to Phuket in early April which has the Zika virus.
Does anyone have any advice?

You could get an antibody test if chat to GP.
Congrats, btw. I hope it all goes well.

I do actually know a lot about Zika & if it was me I wouldn't be the slightest bit worried. Would take too long to explain all the reasons why, though. If you get a clear blood test then you will know you are in clear with an ordinary risk base.

Tbh I'd change the location of the holiday. It's not worth the risk. Although at the risk of being all doom and gloom, I might wait until I was a bit further along the pregnancy. I've made changes to my life before and then sadly had m/c

GlitteryFluff · 20/08/2017 17:55

leigh she's already been away

I'd get the test done to put my mind at rest.

Eusebius · 20/08/2017 17:56

Isn't what the OP is saying is that she has already been to a place with the Zika virus and is now worried?

onemoremummy · 20/08/2017 18:01

@leighdinglady the OP said she WENT on a holiday to Phuket, rather than is going to...

OP do you know how far along you are? The virus only lives in the bloodstream for 2 weeks, so if you only got pregnant a couple of weeks after you came back you should be fine!

leighdinglady · 20/08/2017 18:14

Ooh sorry! Completely misread that. I wouldn't worry then. Especially if your not far along. Hopefully they can see from a blood test.

Sorry again!

CBB79 · 20/08/2017 18:26

Yes, we went in April. I would be 4-5 weeks

You're out of danger zone as far as I can tell

I wouldn't worry too much as you wouldn't have been pregnant while you were out there.

However I am not medical, so couldn't say if prior exposure to Zika could affect a pre- conceived baby.

moggle · 21/08/2017 09:28

You don't need to worry, as thingy says, they say if you get symptoms then wait 8 weeks. It's 17 weeks or so since the end of April so you're fine.
More importantly, start taking folic acid if you aren't already. And CONGRATULATIONS!!

TonicAndTonic · 21/08/2017 09:39

Congratulations!

The guidance is wait 8 weeks before conceiving for a woman who has travelled to a Zika area, but 6 months if her male partner travelled there (see down the bottom of the page thingymabob linked to. It's because the virus has the potential to live in sperm much longer than in the bloodstream.

So if baby's father was in Phuket with you, there's a slight risk. See your GP for reassurance, but you may not get an antibody test on the NHS if neither of you have had symptoms since you got back.

Fruitcorner123 · 21/08/2017 21:59

someone I know was told they had to wait 3 months before trying to conceive after visiting zika area ( partner was with her). You sound like you have so hopefully should be fine. Obviously see your GP to confirm though.

Thanks all. Have made an appt with doctor for Wednesday to chat through next steps and blood tests
