job interview but pregnant

I have just been invited for a job interview for a role I really want, however in between sending off the initial application and now I have found out that I am 6 weeks pregnant. I don't really know what to do, I am tempted to go for the interview just to see if I get it but would feel very dishonest if I didn't tell them beforehand. Any advice would be much appreciated.

As it's a job you really want then go to the interview, see what happens and take it from there.

If you're successful - what is their mat leave policy like? If you wouldn't be eligible for SMP or an enhanced package then will you be able to manage on Maternity Allowance? Could you have a shorter period off, could your partner take some time as Shared Parental leave? Would you want to?

Good luck!

thank you, I think I will go for the interview and see what happens, I just wouldn't want to be seen as dishonest by not telling them beforehand. I am currently self employed so would only be applying for maternity allowance anyway.

No one would expect you to announce a pregancy until you had told your family, and many people don't until the 12 week scan or later. Most employers who try to operate fairly and equally (especially large companies and public sector) and 'lead the way' would not discriminate at an interview based on pregnancy. I have several colleagues who announced pregnancies on the day they started at the office - they are excellent at their jobs and an asset to the organisation. Mat leave is Mat leave, whether you have established yourself first or not is neither here not there.

Saying that, if a role was temporary, leading up to a specific deadline within the first year or something similar I would not take it if I could not fulfil the brief.

Do you think a man would mention during a job interview that he was due to become a father and so thought he'd mention it now as it would involve taking time off when the baby arrived? Doubt it.

Lots of people don't even know they are pregnant at six week, go for the interview and don't tell them, it's not their business. Good luck hope you get the job! 😀
