Just reading the list my midwife has given me, Items to bring into Hospital

Please bring your personal requisites including: night attire (front opening especially for breast feeding), slippers, dressing gown, soap and flannels, thick maternity sanitary towels, paper pants, toothbrush and toothpaste, hairbrush and comb, knitting, reading, coins for telephone, and a change of clothes

Umm does anyone know where I can buy knitting needles & wool these days Confused

I haven't knitted since I was about 10 Grin Grin

Grin That's hilariousGrin mind you I'd like to learn to crochet but if I manage to master it b4 my due date I doubt I'll be bringing it with me to the hospital. When are you due?

Not due til January, I reckon I could get a scarf started before then [I seem to remember knitting many scarves when I was a kid]

....Any chemist or place that does maternity supplies? They're super common.

The list is clearly a bit outdated (coins for phone, soap and flannels) but I don't know why you're being so snide about knitting and paper pants. The one is very useful, the other is still plenty popular and would be a great thing to do in hospital if you're bored. You get needles and wool the same place you always have - a haberdasher's.

Grin Paper pants may be a but weird but Tena pants are amazing for after birth! I didn't have them with dd1 and wasn't prepared for all the blood, but invested in some with dd2 and not a single leak. Perfect!

@TiramisuQueenoftheFaeries I don't think OP was being snide about knitting - it IS an odd thing to put on a list like this because quite obviously not all women knit!

And I think asking where to get paper pants is a legitimate question - I wouldn't know either.

Don't bother with paper pants - save some of your old ones up to take in with you and bin after use.

I'd go for flip-flops or Crocs, rather than slippers, so that you can wear them in the shower.

I also don't see the point in sweaty paper pants when you can buy packs of cheap knickers from primark. Much more comfortable.

Is this for people who need to stay in for a while? I was either in pretty advanced labour (and not in any mood to read or knit!) or had my arms full of DS when I was in overnight after it.

Well, you do now, I guess! Grin Boots or a large Tesco will do you fine. They're good because you can just chuck them after you've bled all over them and they also tend to be GIANT, which is good for postpartum. You can just take your own giant normal pants if you don't mind staining them obvs.

Obviously not everyone knits, but it's not some bizarre archaism that people stopped doing in 1947 either. I think it's a good suggestion for time in hospital. It's a list of suggestions obvs - no-one's going to chuck you out of hospital if you don't wear a dressing gown or didn't bring anything to read.

Might want to take any medications your prescribed. I remember taking my epilepsy tablets and just informing the nurse I had them depending on time of being admitted it can be hard to get hold of certain meds if the pharmacy isn't open

DO NOT BUY PAPER PANTS AS THEY ARE CRAP!
Buy some granny pants in a size you never thought possible from a cheap shop and then bin afterwards.

I am a big knitter, and I think that's an odd thing to include - it's like saying "bring a sketch pad and pencils" - lots of people like to draw and it's a good way to pass time, but not everyone does!

I don't see why they specifically say knitting? I like to crochet, is that not allowed?. Why just knitting? I'm imagining turning up to the hospital, getting my crochet stuff out to then be met with steely glares and exasperated sighs because I didn't bring the requisite wool based activity. sniggers

I have my midwife appointment next week so no doubt I have all of these useful lists to come! I'll be lucky if I remember to take clothes for me and the baby, never mind my sodding crochet hooks! Mind you at least I'd have a prop to offer should they need to break my waters (might need a longer one maybe...?)

The paper pants are useless, I bought several sizes bigger and they wouldn't go up past mid thigh. I'm a size 12 in pants usually and I had bought 16-18 which was the largest available.

Get some tena lady instead - if you go on the Tena and Depends websites you can sign up for a free trial of each. That gives you a few pairs to get through the first day or so, and then you can switch to big cheap cotton pants. I don't like primark pants so I got my big granny pants from Tesco. In black.

And the paper pants question was genuine! I had no clue such a thing even existed!!

Not only is it weirdly specific, but seriously, when do they think you are going to be knitting?!? I can't imagine even the most avid knitter would be inclined to do so during labour, and I can't say during any of my time on a post natal ward did I think 'gosh I'm bored, wish I'd bought some knitting'....
