Hi all

we have decided on girls names - Dorothea or Enid - but the scan said boy - oh dear!

There is great debate at themoment in our house as our tastes differ so greatly. i would love some opinions - i dislike all dh's part of the list, but i am trying to be 'accomodating' - at least until the birth when i will just name him whatever i damn well please!!!!
here is the list -

1 - Irvine (dh)
2 - Alec (dh)
3 - Magnus (dh)
4 - Dougal (dh)
5 - Gregor (dh)
6 - Herbert (MINE!!!!)
7 - Cosmo (MINE!!!)

Others are Ulysess (!!!) and Otis

Well as you can see my taste is far superior to his but this is the list!
Cosmo is probably the forerunner as we both like it.
Opinions please ladies.

love Clara

oh - siblings are dd's Iris and Pearl and ds Eli

Iklboo · 29/03/2007 16:41

Sorry but I prefer your DH's names. Just personal pref - and it's got bugger all to do with me! I'm just thinking of DS going to local school and called Herbert or Cosmo. The kids AIN'T gonna be kind

PestoEasterMonster · 29/03/2007 16:42

I love Cosmo!

Iklboo · 29/03/2007 16:43

I'm old enough to remember Benny Hill etc - on of the characters was called Cosmo Smallpiece, so that's all I can think of when I hear it My fault I know.
It's a fine name (actor James Cosmo is brilliant)

collision · 29/03/2007 16:44

Sorry but not keen on any and this child has to go to school with these names!

They are all a bit 'out there' bit dont mind Otis!

Iklboo · 29/03/2007 16:46

Clara - your names are very Scottish - are you north of the border?

Swizzler · 29/03/2007 16:47

Like Gregor and Dougal. Herbert is the fat boy from the William books, so no . We were tempted by Magnus, but decided against it in the end. I take it your husband's Scottish?

Q like Irvine as well, but it's a surname in DH's family (as is Douglas).

PG Wodehouse said to never trust a man whose name ended with -o, so Cosmo, Hugo, Odo etc. out for me!

clarahj · 29/03/2007 16:58

My husband is Scottish but i dragged him down to Brighton when we got married as i wanted to be near my family when i was pregnant with Iris.
Because of our location i dont think teasing at school would really be an issue with names like Cosmo - Iris and Eli go to school with kids called Tiger, Betty, Sidney and the like.
I just cant get Cosmo out of my head, and Herbert would be called Herb.
Magnus is nice but Scottish names are very popular here and i can see this being the next big one - it is similar to Angus but not as popular ( Iris had 3 Angus' in her class last year!!!)

I love Herbie!

Baysmum · 29/03/2007 17:07

Is Eli short for anything? We are in same position - girls name completely sorted (Thea spookily enough) but its a boy and we cant decide! Good luck, I love Dougie if thats any help.

laksa · 29/03/2007 17:14

I like Cosmo too!

clarahj · 29/03/2007 17:18

baysmum - Eli is short for Elijah but he was always meant to be just Eli - dh had a tantrum on the way to the registry office and demanded that we give him a longer name with Eli as a nn. He is never Elijah though.
dh loves Dougie - i think that is th eappeal of Dougal for him.
i cant see us ever getting throught this!!!! He gets terribly offended if i dislike any Scottish names and if i lean to heavily on Cosmo he says i am not letting him have a say - despite the fact he likes Cosmo!!!!
I just cant stand the thought of my child having a name that i hate.

Since you ask, I live in Scotland so maybe I have a bias here too, but I do like 3 of your dh's names:

Magnus, Dougal and Gregor.

I don't really like Cosmo, or Ulysess, and no offence intended, but I REALLY dislike Herbert.

I do like Otis though.

Hope you can find one that you both like, though. MN opinions like mine shouldn't really matter in the grand scheme of things...

Baysmum · 29/03/2007 17:25

You know you'll get your own way in the end - if you like it then stick to your guns. My husband is into Hamish at the moment AND we have a v Scottish sounding surname - DS would sound like a main part in Monarch of the Glen AND we're not even Scottish!
Do you pronounce Eli as Eee-lie? Sorry Im sounding so thick, I just like it loads and checking out you say it like I do in my head!

Miaou · 29/03/2007 17:26

Cosmo and Otis are my faves out of those. Don't like Herbert but I like Herbie

Rantum · 29/03/2007 17:29

Anyway, sorry to be a pedant but isn't the spelling ULYSSES?

LedodgyCheapEasterEggsAreASin · 29/03/2007 17:30

I'm afraid I like your dh's names better too! I had a cat called Cosmo once so that ruled that out. What about Angus?

nailpolish · 29/03/2007 17:42

Irvine reminds me a rough area of Glasgow im afraid

Alec is ok but i prefer Alex

Magnus is nice

Dougal is ok but reminds me of magic roundabout!

Gregor is ok but quite common round here (Scotland tho not Brighton)

other scottish name s i like are
Stuart
Angus (where i live!)
Struan
Alasdair

Herbert is quite American which puts me off

Cosmo is great

ps
you will decide better when he is born and you can see him!

good lck

nailpolish · 29/03/2007 17:44

Rharidh
Rory
Donald
Dugald
Eoin

some more scottish names for you

(i hope that doesnt make it worse )

nailpolish · 29/03/2007 17:45

oops Rhuaridh
not Ruaridh

collision · 29/03/2007 17:45

Sorry but Herbert is a derogatory name where I am from.

'You daft Herbert!!' (Is it also slang for gays?) Not sure.

lemonaid · 29/03/2007 18:10

DS has one of your DH's names as a first name and another as one of his middle names, so I guess it's plain to see which camp I'm in . I do quite like Cosmo, though, although would never have used it myself.

hollyandtheeasterbunny · 29/03/2007 18:38

I went to school with a Cosmo and a Dougal and the children were not kind to them. In fact they were bullied quite a lot because of their names. My dp has an "unusual" name and he still gets people taking the piss at age 35!

mum2george · 29/03/2007 19:48

Collision, Herbert is around here too, as in "you dirty 'erbert".

We are looking at more traditional names, mainly because I originally come from a city where most of the names on the list would be an open invite for a punching!
