Are omega-3 supplements an OK replacement for oily fish?

Am 24 wks, and although I'm eating as well as I can (whole grain, five a day, all that jazz) most of the time I just cannot face fish. I like it normally and have choked down the odd portion of mackerel or salmon while pg, but most of the time the thought makes me want to chuck.
I'm taking Pregnacare Plus with the omega-3 supplement - will that make up for it, do you reckon?

I'm veggie so don't eat fish at all and I took the extra omega-3 supplement while pregnant - I think so long as you eat a healthy balanced diet you'll be fine.

Hi, I always believed one of the three oil's is EPO which you cant take when PG!?

Yes, the omega supplements are fish oils!

BabyMadwithBump · 29/03/2007 16:44

Just checked omega 3 is fish oil, omega 6 is olive oil, and omega 9 is evening primrose oil (EPO)!

You'll be fine with the supplements you are taking, although if your appetite for fish returns that's great. Don't worry about omega 6 and 9, it's 3 most of us are short of. And it's the balance between 3 and 6 that matters - people tend to eat a lot of 6 (vegetable oils) and very little 3, so most of us need more 3 and less 6, IYSWIM. No point taking extra 3 if you then take extra 6 too.

Iwouldgo, flax seed oil is a veggie omega 3, although it's not identical to fish oil - your body has to convert it into the chemical equivalent of fish oil. Not everyone does this very well so those who can eat fish are ahead of the game.

There's also a veggie omega 3 supplement now, that you can get from water4life - my SIL is a chiropractor specialising in pregnancy and recommended it to me.

only omega 3 supplement that is safe during pregnancy is mumomega from Boots.

What about the Pregnacare Plus supplements that have a sep omega 3 tablet? Are these not safe then?
