OK so I'm 10 weeks. Scan on. 1 Sept.
I am dying to buy stuff. I love being organised etc.. I'm a list of lists type person. We do need to re do bedroom and bits before hand ideally. So I'm going to paint bedroom this week. New bed and furniture mid Sept. Then start buying stuff maybe. As feel with Xmas etc will be a major rush. Me and dp both have a week off end Oct. And I want to make sure the bulky expense is done by then.?

Also I brought all new with DS. And soon realised alot was a waste of money.
So I have said I'd look at certain items second hand.. Bath, steriliser, monitors etc. Dp has only agreed to bath and monitors.
One of my good friends is selling a moses basket used twice for her grandson it's immaculate and I'd get a mattress however dp says he wants new. But I can see it being a waste of money it's only going to be used in lounge and crib in bedroom. And again seen a lovely crib. Wooden second hand. Which I would Milton down etc and get new mattress and he's not keen.. I thought women were the fussy ones.

We had all second (or third, or fourth) hand for ours, apart from mattresses. Cot, pushchair, Moses, monitor, highchair, you name it. Can't see why you'd need new, so much stuff out there in immaculate condition. And I didn't do any prep until after the anomaly scan (so 20ish weeks) but that's just personal preference. If it makes you feel more settled doing bits now, why not.

I'm expecting my first and have no problem at all with whatever I can get second hand really! I've been given a bunch of stuff from friends. 2 Moses baskets, loads of baby grows, bouncer, play mats etc. Would have happily had a second hand furniture set but got some I love half price from Mothercare that we've put together this week (now 20 weeks). Had our pram since I was 12 weeks as we found a really good deal from Toys R Us! Not got much left to get now. Just a baby bath and cot mattress really.

I have had this conversation with a friends DD who is expecting.

Both us oldies told her to buy some white baby grows 0-3 months, and we would knit some cardies for her, then she can have the fun of buying new once the baby is born.
Asda is amazing for quality and value, and if you go online you can order to the store or home, rather than liking something and not finding the right size.
Moss basket for baby, unless you find a cot you love, and old cot new matteress, is a good idea. As to the value of prams at bootsales,,, £30 for a £300 pram with all the bits, but I do think a new car seat is good, unless you know it's not one that has been in crash.

I don't think there's any right or wrong answer, I bought one book before they were even conceived Blush. But mostly held off until after the 12 week scan. The only advice I would give is to be sure you're getting seasonally appropriate stuff if buying way in advance. And also that if you start getting it now, there's a long wait in which you may see stuff you like more / too. For that reason I've held off mostly on clothes (ours is due Nov) and am enjoying picking up Wintery bits.

I'd say grab all the bargains you can but don't buy a second hand car seat and make sure you have instructions / safety info (or can find online) with things like cots. Have fun! Smile

I used mostly second hand stuff for mine. I wouldn't feel comfortable about buying anything before the 12 week scan, and mostly I left it until after the 20 week scan.

Waitingonasmile · 12/08/2017 21:40

We bought everything after DS arrived which was 35 weeks. If he hadn't been early we would have ordered about 37 weeks. That's just personal preference for me as I don't feel comfortable having baby stuff in the house before baby arrives.

Wow lots of diff views and I like the diff reasons. I think I'll do the decorating then start getting bits. Maybe star t with some smaller stuff then instead of the big.. Parents doing pram so that's the most expensive part out if our hands... Big stuff I get will go to my dads spare room for now until closer to the time.. So won't be In the house. I'd out the cot etc up maybe 6 weeks before as I will the crib.. Simply because Altho cot won't get used for a fair while.. I struggle getting my head around a new layout of a room. Or new furniture. I can't explain but it makes me anxious so I need time to get used to it. Bizarre and weird I know :/
