When does midwife visit?

I haven't been given much info at all by my midwife throughout this entire pregnancy. I am currently 39+3 and just thinking I have no idea what will happen after the birth.

I am planning on going to a midwife led birth centre which is under another Trust so I'm not sure whether they will notify community midwife team or whether I will need to do that and when/how often they will visit after the birth

Think it's usually the day after you're discharged from wherever you had your baby. Frequency of visits depends on things like weight gain, etc so if you have a baby that loses quite a bit of its birth weight you might get a few more visits till they've gone back up. That's my experience anyway and seems similar with friends and family members who have also had babies recently.

One home visit at 9 days here.

Other regular visits every couple of days depending how baby puts on weight, but you had to go to them (first one was back at the birth hospital with 48 hours which was an absolute pain).

Here you always get a home visit the day after you get home, then usually a day after that then another a couple of visits before handover to health visitor on day 10. You don't have to go to them. I presume the hospital/birth centre must tell the community midwives.

Depends where you are. Unfortunately postnatal care is the Cinderella service due to financial restraints. Commonly you will see midwife visit within 2 days of discharge then be seen at home or in clinic on day 5-8 and 10-14 for discharge. Obviously if there are concerns things will be different but this is basic. You don't need to tell community midwives, that will be done when you leave the hospital

Usually the day after you are discharged and also when the baby is five days old (for the heel prick test) and then usually another one around ten days. Sometimes the baby might still be in hospital when some of the visits or appointments are usually done.

Home visit the day after would have been soooo much better rather than trudging back to the hospital.

Thinking about it the day 9 visit was a HV by midwife - so no midwife home visits here at all.

I moved house at 37 weeks and stayed with the original booked hospital, which was in a different county but the same distance as labour suite in the new county. I was a bit worried as post natal care was a bit hit and miss and we didn't get any info from the midwife discharging us until I reminded her at the car door that I lived in a different county as she had mentioned a midwife visit the next day. She looked a bit confused (!) and did not reassure me but said 'oh...'! But I did get a midwife from my community team visit the next day so she must have informed the right ones!

I had home visit the day after discharge (day 4), day 5 for heel prick, day 7 for weighing, day 9 we had to go to a local children's centre for weighing, then home visit by HV day 10. DS was 5 weeks early and jaundiced though.

I wasn't told until I left hospital when to expect what so I'd be guided by what they say

I came home on day 4 & had a mw visit the next day which was day 5 & another one on day 6 to get my staples out post emcs. DS had lost too much weight so we had to go back to hospital but luckily didn't have to stay in. Did mean we had a couple of extra mw visits to check his weight but discharged from the mw at day 10 & then health visitor came over in day 14.

The visits were all fine & very reassuring after DS lost weight but it was frustrating never knowing what time mw would arrive so having to stay in all day until she came.
