5+1 U/S Yolk sac but no fetal pole

The sonographer wasn't concerned, she seemed to think it was too early to see a foetus and said I need to book an appointment with the midwife and another scan at 12 weeks but the only reassurance I wanted was to see a baby and a heartbeat. Has anyone had a similar experience and gone on to have a healthy pregnancy?

When I booked in my early scan they said it was best to wait until about 7 weeks so there was a good chance to see the fetal pole, so my guess is that you're just a little early and that everything will be fine Smile try not to worry xxx

Mum2oneds · 10/08/2017 10:53

I was the same so we did a private one a week later and it was there xxx

Thank you both, I just wanted to hear real experiences and not medical terms and percentages of the outcome of the next scan

I was the same midwife kept saying I was 6+ weeks but I knew I wasn't due to long cycle and knowing exact day I ovulated (cd 26) so knew i wouldn't be that far along. Went for first early scan and they couldn't see anything but HCG was good. Went back at 5+4 and could see sac but no baby yet as was just too early.
I've decided to wait until I'm 9 weeks to go for private scan as wanted to make sure I'de be able to hear the heartbeat. Feels like time is standing still waiting for scan but really excited/nervous!

Snoozlecorn · 10/08/2017 19:28

I had a private scan at 7 weeks and had a strong heartbeat so maybe go back in a couple of weeks?

Strokethefurrywall · 10/08/2017 19:39

It's incredibly unlikely to see a heartbeat at 5+1 if your dates are certain.
Most hearts don't start beating until 5+5 or 5+6.

I saw both of mine at 5+6, DS1s was pretty fast, DS2s was a little slower and OBGYN said it probably had only just started beating in the previous few hours.

The changes are swift at the early stage so if you can hold on another week you should be able to see the heartbeat.

Don't panic, at this early stage a lot can happen in just a few days! I had a scan at what I thought was just over 5 weeks - could see thickened wall of uterus but nothing else. Was scanned again a few days later and could see a yolk sac, then one week after that (when I was around 6.5 weeks) we had a third scan and finally saw the fetal pole and heard the heartbeat.

peachgreen · 10/08/2017 21:36

Was it internal or external. I don't think you'd ever see a heartbeat that early - it won't have started - but with a very sensitive internal and really good conditions you MIGHT have seen a fetal pole but definitely not for sure. Did she measure the sac?

Farmerswife4life1984 · 10/08/2017 21:38

Omg why oh why do they do scans so early ??? This is what caused anxiety !!! Let nature do its thing and just wait . I hope everything works out but doing scans so early is nothing but a worry ! Nothing you can do anyways so why do a scan ? I don't agree with scans before at least 8 weeks as they are not conclusive to what is going to happen .

peachgreen · 10/08/2017 22:05

@Farmerswife4life1984 Early scans can help provide a little bit of reassurance to women who have suffered losses. I had a MMC discovered at 11+5 (heartbeat stopped some time between 10+5 and 11+5) but had slow and delayed growth from 5+5 (when I had a scan as a result of a bleed). This helped me prepare for the inevitable death of my baby and although it was an awful experience being so in limbo, it was better for me than the shock at 12 weeks would have been had I not had those early scans.

This pregnancy I had a scan at 6+4 (again, after a bleed) and seeing a heartbeat and normal growth was incredibly reassuring after what I'd been through.

Unfortunately it's not possible for some women to just accept that what will be will be and get on with it.

Littleblueberry · 10/08/2017 22:16

I measured 6-7 weeks and they saw nothing in the sac. Going back on Thursday for an outcome. The last week has been awful then next week I hope will go better. My husband and I are at each others throats. I agree an early scan can sometimes cause uneccessary anxiety but can also give reassurance. I was going to have a private one regardless of what happened (it didn't turn out that way) because I was already having difficulty hiding it at work. They sniff it out!

boatrace30 · 11/08/2017 08:32

I had a scan at 5+4, exactly the same result as yours, went back a week later and a heartbeat was there! I think 6 weeks really is the minimum
For seeing anything. But they scanned me at 5weeks as they wouldn't believe my dates (I have long, irregular cycles) and thought I was further along

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 11/08/2017 09:30

I had a scan at 5 weeks, which showed no pregnancy just a thickened lining. My hcg wasn't high enough for a scan to detect anything, but 2 weeks later there was a sac fetal pole and heartbeat. Don't lose hope just yet, but try to remain neutral.

AConvivialHost · 11/08/2017 09:41

We only saw the sac at 5 weeks, then heartbeat at re-scan at 7 weeks. DD is now 7 months Smile.

WombOfOnesOwn · 11/08/2017 17:32

Wow! I saw a heartbeat at 5w6d...didn't realize at the time that it was very early and I was probably quite lucky and that it had probably started beating very, very soon before!
