Acyclovir in pregnancy

Hi ladies, I suffer from herpes type 2. I am currently 36 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I've been told I need to start taking acyclovir to stop any outbreak from happening whilst giving birth. What dose do I need to take? Also has anybody else gave birth successfully with herpes. Any advice would be great. Thank you x

Hi there, I have! Started taking when I had flares in second half of pregnancy, tell the midwife that's why you want it and they'll give you a specific prescription. As long as you have no active sores on day you deliver there's very very little risk to baby. I was so paranoid but all was fine!
Word of advice tho-ask if you can continue to take post delivery as I had an awful flare afterwards. I was bf so didn't want to risk it and didn't get to GP to ask so I'll check in advance next time. Wishing you a safe and happy delivery Smile

Thankyou kiwi32, did you take it 3 times a day? Also the midwifes don't really seem to think this is a big deal was yours the same. I'm soooo petrified x

I think I took 400mg twice daily but I can't 100% remember so def check with a GP/midwife. Yes I think they only really treat it as a high risk thing if you have contracted HSV during your pregnancy as then you have limited time to build up immunity and pass it to your baby. I really wouldn't worry at all, it's generally a very low risk. Just remember a lot of women have HSV and you don't hear of lots of babies being infected-that should tell you it's rare. I would let your midwife know you're worried though and I'm sure she'll be happy to talk it through with you and make sure you understand everything. That might help with worries (which are not what you need right now!)
