Feeling the baby move - when and what does it feel like?

Hi everyone

19 weeks and getting worried as everyone keeps asking me if I feel any movement. I'm not sure what I'm looking out for. Sometimes I feel what can only be described as twitches on my lower left side. Not painful but unusual.

My midwife hasn't really explained it to me but people have been asking me as early as 15 weeks?! Should i feel movement?
Could what I'm feeling be movement from the baby?

Little bit worried as it's my first and not sure what to look for Sad

First pregnancy, I didn't feel anything until 24 weeks. I think it was a combination of her being small and back to back.
I felt like a fluttering, swooshing sort of thing. I never actually felt her kick throughout the whole pregnancy, baby 2 made up for it though Grin

ChickenBhuna · 01/08/2017 12:47

Early on - 15-20 weeks it felt like big bubbles popping in my uterus. Later the movements become more definite - like if you imagine your tummy is a washing machine and balls are rolling around in it.

honeysucklejasmine · 01/08/2017 12:50

Do you know where you placenta is? It might be mentioned on scan notes.

With dd1 I had anterior placenta and felt v little until about 25 weeks, and it remained muffled. It felt like I had gas initially, when you can feel it bubbling through your digestive system.

With dd2 I have posterior placenta and felt first flutterings around 17 weeks, and could watch my abdomen move from about 20 weeks. Right now she's doing a bloody hula dance from the feel of it (30 weeks).

redfragglebiker · 01/08/2017 12:51

I'm 23+5 and it;s only been the last couple of weeks I would say I can properly feel her.
Kinda feels like popcorn going off, or that odd lurching stomach feeling you get on a rollercoaster.
The first few times I thought it was gas!

Gothbaby · 01/08/2017 14:03

i didnt feel anything til a good 24 weeks in i think!! Everyone told me it feels like a butterfly flutter. But to me... it kinda felt like a coin flip x

Monkeypuzzle32 · 01/08/2017 14:09

I'm 19 weeks 4 and have only felt something twice at about 17 weeks, I've had a scan since then but not felt anything else-i shone s torch on my belly the first time and felt something then once when I was lying down I felt something -it does worry me though same as you

StepAwayFromCake · 01/08/2017 14:21

The position of the placenta will affect how and where you feel the baby. Also how fat you are (not being rude - I'm fat and how many babies you've had. For me:
Dc1, posterior placenta, 19-20w.

Dc2, anterior placenta, 21w.

Dc3, posterior placenta, 18w.

But from about 18-20w virtually anything you feel down there is the baby. Your intestines are being pushed upwards - if you feel 'bubbles' it's not wind Grin

talonofthehawk · 01/08/2017 14:24

Hi! Don't be worried. I didn't feel much until about 24 weeks

BertieBotts · 01/08/2017 16:39

Most people don't feel movement until 20+ weeks with the first pregnancy. In later ones it can be earlier because you know what to look for.

It feels like bubbles or flutters or twitches at first, just a little sort of yep, that's weird kind of thing. You don't really get proper kicks until they are much bigger.

DryHeave · 01/08/2017 16:43

I'm 24 weeks with my first. I have an anterior placenta which dampens kicks.

First feelings were around 18 weeks, and they felt like when your eye is twitching like mad. But only once twitch. I felt like I was imagining half of them.

I now feel distinct rolling around and thumps, which started about 21/22 weeks but with my placenta where it is I only feel them very low down or high up.

ScarletSienna · 01/08/2017 16:45

I had an anterior placenta and only felt dc move a handful of times the whole pregnancy. It was really quite stressful!

Expectingbsbunumber2 · 01/08/2017 16:45

I'm 19 weeks also and I have been feeling movement for the last few days. It's hard to describe but for me it feels like bubbles popping x

Lemondrop99 · 01/08/2017 16:52

I didn't feel anything until 22 weeks. It felt like a tap or a flick from the inside, just around my belly button.

Don't panic, 19 weeks is still early, especially for a first baby

HeyMicky · 01/08/2017 16:56

Nothing till 20 weeks with both of mine. With DD1 I'd had a curry the night before and I thought I had intestinal gurglings of doom - was thrilled for two reasons when I realised what it was Grin

tessa1987 · 01/08/2017 16:59

I'm 21+6 - I've been feeling movement for a few weeks, not very strong but feels like twitches to me too! Mainly when I lie still.

Beachbaby2017 · 01/08/2017 18:59

My guess is that some of what you think is feelings of digestion is actually the baby! Once your uterus gets bigger it will be more clear, because, as a PP said, your intestines will be out of the way. And of course as the baby gets bigger it will be more obvious too.

Beachbaby2017 · 01/08/2017 19:02

I find this site helpful for visualizing where what is in my body as things progress:

Minxmumma · 02/08/2017 14:11

My first was back to back and I didn't feel anything for ages. My last one was a proper live wire and started off at 18/ 20weeks feeling like my stomach was gurgling in the wrong place ended up being like a washing machine visible across the room! Early days it was easier to lie down and relax to try and focus.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 02/08/2017 14:56

I was about 20ish weeks. Felt very light flutterings in my stomach. Could have easily missed it had I been doing other stuff.

Hannabee123 · 02/08/2017 15:25

When did you all start to show? I carry abit of stomach podge and I just feel like I look like I have eaten nothing but cake for months ConfusedCake

At 18 weeks I lay on my stomach on my bed and concentrated on the feelings I was getting. I felt a gentle rolling- it was amazing!

couchparsnip · 02/08/2017 16:34

I felt it about 20 weeks or so. Fluttering at first and then he used to get hiccups.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 02/08/2017 17:22

I only started to show at 18 weeks or so and that was just when I led down. (I was quite skinny, not anymore) I started showing properly at 24 weeks or so but I'm sure to everyone else I just looked fat.

ifeellikechickentonight · 02/08/2017 18:55

Agree with PP description of it being like popcorn popping, or bubbles bursting. Later on when the kicks are stronger it's like being pinged with an elastic band.

I'm 18 weeks and have been feeling movements for a month but I know what I'm looking for. With DD1 I had an anterior placenta and didn't feel anything until 22/23. Then I realised that small movements I had attributed to digestion in earlier weeks were actually the baby.

Jenwen22 · 02/08/2017 23:01

With DS I didnt feel anything till 20 weeks as i had an anterior placenta and didnt know what I was supposed to be feeling. It started off like popcorn going off, getting more definate as time went on. Xx
