Did you have sickness nausea with pregnancy?

Been discussing symptoms with a friend as neither of us have many yet - i am six weeks she is eight - particularly sickness and nausea.

Her midwife said 25% of women don't get any at all so i'm curious, which of you had sickness, nausea, both or none? and if you had it when did it start?

islandbambini no, it didn't put me off doing it again but mine was only severe the first and part of the second tri, not all the wait through like you. I have a terrible memory though, my youngest isn't 7 months old and I remember that I swore blind I couldn't do it ever again and it was too traumatic but the actual memory is fading and if I was a more patient mother and financially better off I imagine I'd have forgotten how hard it was and be planning a fourth by a couple of years. My advice to you is to not let that put you off if that is what is stopping you try for another. I have heard (not researched) that if you pre-empt hyperemeses and start medication before the sickness it lessens it greatly? And you might be one of the lucky ones who doesn't get it a second time.

From exactly 5 wks I had horrendous nausea and sickness, it was worst from 6 to 14 weeks where I threw up around 12 times a day, after that it dropped to between 2 and 4 times and carried on tI'll the day I had DS and DD. I had one mmc and still suffered from sickness and nausea until 3 weeks after the erpc which really really pissed me off!

Nausea and vomiting from 8 weeks to about 18 weeks. It was awful. I'm a teacher and was constantly running out of lessons to vomit. We were also house-hunting at the time and I may have vomited in the toilets of several houses we were looking around... One of the many reasons I have no plans for a second!

silkpyjamasallday · 31/07/2017 22:20

I started feeling nauseous almost immediately on conceiving, I had been vomiting daily and frequently for 3 weeks when I took a pregnancy test. I threw up multiple times a day for the entire pregnancy, I vomited during labour too. It went as soon as I had given birth. All the women in my family have awful sickness in pregnancy regardless of the sex of the baby, but easy labours so there was an upside as that was true for me too. I got used to it in the end and once I got to 6 months and it hadn't let up I accepted I was in it for the long haul.

Really bad with DC1, puking 20+ times a day at one point, then gradually improved after 15 weeks. Gone at about 30 weeks.

DC2 I puked about 5 times a day until week 30

DC3 I puked about 10 times a day until my waters broke

DC4 same as DC3

DC5 puking about 5 times a day until birth, one a day for a week and then just occasionally after that. Nausea carried on for over a year after birth.

All pregnancies, the sickness started at about 6-7 weeks.

IslandBambini · 01/08/2017 08:05

@happydays00 That's exactly where I'm at. I'd like to have another but not sure I could do it again, plus I've heard if you've suffered sickness in the past you may be more prone to it happening again? Wonder if there's any truth to that.

IslandBambini · 01/08/2017 08:09

@Shemozzle Thanks for replying, you were brave and I think if I had just decided when my son was a couple of years younger I'd have had the second by now! I'm just dilli-dallying(spelling?) at the moment lol

I have my fingers and toes crossed hoping it was a one off thing and optimistic (slightly) it won't happen again.. Even the doctors at the hospital couldn't really give me a reason why it happens to some, at the time I thought I must have been terrible in a previous life or something ha!

DragonsandDungeons · 01/08/2017 08:12

With my first pregnancy, I had horrible sickness. It was extreme and I nearly ended up in hospital. This resulted in a healthy baby.

With my second, I had occasional mild nausea. Everyone told me I was "lucky" this time. I miscarried at 9 weeks.

That's not to say not having sickness means you'll miscarry. If you have severe sickness once, you're more likely to get it repeatedly, so for me it was a sign. If you've never had it, that's different.

whyhastherumgone · 01/08/2017 08:24

@dungeonsanddragons thanks for sharing and really sorry to hear you had a miscarriage. I guess that's way i've been a bit worried about - i didn't have any sickness in my first pregnancy which ended in MMC at six weeks and am now about six weeks so was kind of hoping sickness would start this time - which seems mad to wish upon myself especially when as it was missed my body thought i was still pregnant and i still didn't get sick so maybe i actually won't. Confusing times but interesting to read everyone's experiences

I always had it with 3 pregnancies but it usually went by 20 weeks. It was pretty awful.

woodhill · 01/08/2017 08:25

I think I threw up more with 2nd daughter.

DragonsandDungeons · 01/08/2017 08:29

whyhastherumgone I understand your fear. I was really unnerved by the lack of sickness too. I had low HCG this time around, if you're nervous ask them to test your levels. They should understand with previous miscarriage.

However, I know people who have very mild to no sickness and who were fine.

whyhastherumgone · 01/08/2017 08:40

Thanks @dungeonsanddragons i think if i'm not worrying about sickness i will be worrying about something else anyway now! I do feel more positive with this one and my worries aren't all consuming like they were before so fingers crossed that's a good sign - i think last time I definitely had a feeling something was wrong whereas this time it's more of an expected level of anxiety.

It's strange how symptoms can vary so, even with sickness, how it can be so different for different people. I was always a skeptic about people who don't know they're pregnant for ages but it happened to a friend of mine and she genuinely had no symptoms at all and felt fine. My other friend had severe HG the whole way through.

DragonsandDungeons · 01/08/2017 08:52

whyhastherumgone I felt anxious with my first but with this one it was all consuming. I was convinced there was a problem. Feeling positive is a good sign. I hope you have a good pregnancy!

QuercusQuercus · 01/08/2017 08:53

Hi whyhastherumgone. I had two MMCs before my daughter was born, so I totally get the anxiety. If it helps, all my pregnancies were different and I didn't have many symptoms with DD at all. I felt like I had a hangover from weeks 7-9, then everything, including sore boobs, went away and I was convinced it had all gone wrong. It hadn't.

On average, sickness peaks between weeks 7 and 9 and, as you say, a quarter of women don't get it at all. So it could yet happen to you, or you may just have a lovely easy pregnancy.

Pregnancy 1 I went off cooked tomatoes. Just the thought was hideous. Useful when it was August and we had an allotment full of tomato plants.

I'm pregnant again, 6.5 weeks, and I feel sick. It's worse than last time, but I've not hurled yet. It just feels like a combination of hangover and motion sickness. Eating helps, and I'm about to have a cup of ginger tea in the hope that that might work.

itsonlysubterfuge · 01/08/2017 09:38

I was so nauseous with DD starting at about 6 weeks until 22 weeks. I could barely eat a thing, everything smelt horrible. My day was similar to: drink a glass of milk for breakfast, a few cherries for lunch, and half a baked potato with cottage cheese for dinner. Every single bite was forced down and not enjoyed.

I vomited every night around about 10pm strangely enough. The vomited didn't bother me.

I also had SPD starting at 7/8 weeks, great fun! Grin

whyhastherumgone · 01/08/2017 09:38

Thanks @dungeonsanddragons - you sound very similar to me with my previous one, i couldn't think any anything else the anxiety just seemed take over.

@Quercusquercus thanks for posting; that does help :) sorry to hear you are feeling rough again. I'm 6+2 and so far have had sporadic gagging and the feeling that i have too much saliva, and weird head rush/dizzy feelings but that's it so far. Hope you have a healthy happy pregnancy and the nausea doesn't get too much worse for you

QuercusQuercus · 01/08/2017 09:57

No problem why. It sounds like you have morning sickness symptoms, just not out-and-out nausea/vomiting (yet).

Do bear in mind that people who've had extreme experiences are more likely to post on a thread like this, as you can see from the number of very poorly MNetters above. It's actually quite unusual to be that sick. It's just that those who had average experiences are more likely to forget them, or think they're not interesting enough to post about.

My pregnancy book reports that less than 50% of pregnant women actually vomit from morning sickness, and of those most of them tend to have a few days where it's pretty bad and then it recedes.

Many unlucky women do have weeks of vomiting, but it's not standard and you shouldn't be worried if get to twelve weeks without having thrown up.

Emmastone123 · 01/08/2017 10:05

Mine started at 6 weeks. I'm now 9+2 and it's still here. I'm desperate for it to go. No sickness just severe nausea all bloody day. The midwife prescribed me metoclopramide and it's helped a fair bit.

Megha22 · 01/08/2017 11:32

I am not pregnant yet but me and my husband are on the way to becoming parents all we have started with is unprotected sex, now suddenly i have started feeling that my breasts are swelling , i feel very tired and feel like urinating very very often, i have had very light periods this time making me a little doubtful weather now i should see the doctor or not?

53rdWay · 01/08/2017 11:35

Megha22, you're talking about your 4-month-old on another thread this morning so aren't you parents already? Confused

OP - cloth nappies are ace and much less hassle than people
imagine! Definitely look into it.

53rdWay · 01/08/2017 11:37

Oops, wrong thread! (Cloth nappies are still ace, though.)

BroomstickOfLove · 01/08/2017 11:37

Mine started at around 7 weeks both times. With my first pregnancy, I vomited around 8 times a day for the next 10 weeks or so. With the second, I only actually vomited 2 or three times a day, but felt dreadful the rest of the time. With DC1 it felt like food poisoning, while DC2 was more like my worst ever hangover.

allegretto · 01/08/2017 11:39

With DS1 I didn't get it at all. My second pregnancy was twins and I had a bit of nausea for about a week. I was surprised as when I am NOT pregnant I get nausea a lot!
