Mears / anyone can you help? overdue with breast lump

Hi Everyone,
Currently 3 days overdue with first baby. On Saturday I noticed a small hard lump just above left nipple. Went to GP on Monday morning, she said she thinks its a cyst and nothing to worry about. She's made a routine referral to breast unit. Appt should be within 3-4 weeks.

I've previously had 2 lumps in left breast, both been scanned and I was told all fine. This lump is in a different place and is a lot smaller and harder. Am already anxious about the birth, now this is worrying me too. Have you heard of this much in pregnant women?
Thanks so much

Jenni xx

I also am prone to cysts. I have a once yearly check up which involves a grope and an ultrasound. The reason I have these checks is because my Mum had breast cancer when she was young. They've told me that the cysts are in no way an indicator that I may develop cancer in the future. I'm sure it is a harmless cyst, think about all the extra blood and fluid there is in the breast area, especially at your stage of pregnancy. Always worth getting it checked. Try not to worry, I know it's easier said than done. Concentrate on that lovely baby you're going to be having. If you really are going up the walls you could maybe pay for a private consultation, it might be a lot quicker?

I hope this helps? Good luck with the birth.

I don't know if this is relevant but I had a thing/boil/cyst on my right breast when I was breastfeeding DD, she was only a few weeks old. It was very painful and I had to do home-made poltices (sp?). I'm sure they said it was just a milk duct that got blocked for one reason or another. I guess this could happen before you have the baby and not just after so hopefully its nothing. Maybe lots of warmish baths could help unblock it?

Thanks. I rang Bupa to ask about the cost of being seen privately, they said between £200 and £300 for a consultation and ultrasound. Don't really have the money at the moment with being on maternity leave. If baby was due further down the line I would have found the money from somewhere, but the prospect of going into labour at anytime is putting me off a bit.
Thanks for your replies, really are appreciated

No problem Jenni. If you still want to, rather than going through Bupa, try and find out the name of the consultant you have been referred to and phone the hospital and ask for their private secretary's phone number, the consultation should be a lot less than £200-£300, that's Bupa taking a nice big juicy slice for themselves! Good luck

hi jenni, i'm also prone to cysts, have had 5 removed in the past. is it tender to the touch? i've always been told that's a good sign of it being a cyst? also if it's smooth and not bumpy is apparently another good sign. i see a man on harley street (i'm NOT rich but mum had a doulble mastectomy by the time she was 45) his name is Jerry Gilmore and apparently he's the "boob god" when it comes to things like this. it's about 250 quid to see him. hope this help and good luck with your impending little un. xx

Thanks billiejo - the lump is small, my doctor thought about 0.5cm and hard. My friend made a good point and said with it being near the nipple it could well be connected with milk production. It isn't bumpy and feels different depending on which way i'm sitting or lying when I feel it. I'm reasonably sure it's not been there long as it's quite noticeable to touch.

Just to add that I had a similar experience before DD was born. Small lump on side of breast that appeared about 1 week before I gave birth. Lump was about 1cm and quite hard. It cleared after I had DD and started feeding her, so it did seem to be a blocked milk duct. HTH

Sounds similar. Going to midwife in the morning so will mention it to her. Thanks for replying xx

How are you getting on j32?

j32 · 30/03/2007 22:29

Hi, bit up and down like a yo yo to be honest. No change in the lump. Left boob is more sore than the right though, can be when I'm pre-menstrual as well. Although maybe it's more sore because I'm prodding the lump!

No baby action either, got an overdue appointment on Tuesday at the hospital. Asked midwife on Thurs about lump, she wouldn't entertain feeling it! Said she didn't know much about the subject. So no reassurance there.

Thanks for asking, appreciate it
