Pregnant but no appointment with doctor available

Hi, I can´t get an appointment with my doctor till I´m around 3 months or more pregnant. Is this normal? Is there anything I need to know or should/shouldn´t do? Thanks!

Have you at let the surgery know why you want the appt?
They may be able to send you straight to the midwife for 10-12wk 'booking in' rather than via the GP.

Yes, they know I´m pregnant, I had just thought it would be better to go sooner rather than later.. Thanks.

Normal where I am from - went to the GP (at approx 6 weeks) who sent me to the clinic to do a test - once that was confirmed as positive had to book in with MW for when I was 12 weeks - no advice leaflets or anything in the meantime - came as a bit of a shock to me.

The MW went through what you can't eat etc - but IMO, it is a bit late then.

I didn't get to see the doctor (who referred me to the midwife) until I was 8 weeks gone. The doctor did nothing apart from update my record and ask me if I was having any problems, had any questions etc. I saw the midwife at 10 weeks.

In my area, after you have told GP you are pregnant (and it always surprises me a bit that they just take this on faith...) you get booked in for 12 week scan at hospital, and then you get booking in appointment and start seeing the midwife. The only advice I got from GP was to take folic acid.

I think that with most ante-natal stuff in this country they seem to go with the theory that unless something is obviously wrong/you are worried about something/there is a reason for extra vigilence, they don't see you an awful lot in the early stages of pregnancy because it won't make much difference (and you're not actually ill...). Having said that, if you are worried about something, I wouldn't hesitate to contact them.

why on earth can't they give you an appt sooner? that's ridiculous.

on the other hand, seeing a gp is kind of pointless anyway, they just tell you to see the midwife.
so ring your surgery and ask for an appt with the midwife instead. she'll give you all the info you need for booking appt and your forms for mat exemption etc etc

Congratulations. Just make sure you get a booking-in appointment with the midwife sooner, particularly if this is your first. Different health authority areas do it at different points - mine does it at around 8 weeks.

sorry but don't you need an appointment with your doctor before 12 weeks as they need to get you in to fill in the forms so that you can have your scan at 12 weeks and be booked in for your midwife appointments. If you don't go to the doctor till you are past 12 weeks how can they get the paperwork sorted in time for the scan? Or have you already done that?

I didn't need any paperwork at all to get a scan - just name, date of birth, NHS number.

sorry mrsbadger, wasn't clear, just meant don't you need to let doctor know so that you are on the system to get scan. I just thought doctor was first port of call to getting onto the system officially.

When I got my positive result I called my surgery to check the procedure.

The receptionist booked me in with the midwife and I had my booking in apointrment with her at 7 weeks. Had my 1st lot of blood tests at 9 weeks and just had my 12 week scan yesterday.

oh, ok. Weird how different surgeries work. When I phoned up my surgery they booked an appointment with doctor straightaway. I didn't get a booking in with midwife till 10 weeks where they did everything in one go and that was done at hospital not surgery...My first contact was with a doctor who made me fill out a form for nhs card etc and asked which hospital i wanted to use (had a choice of 2). Guess it depends which area you are in. I've heard some people get to have midwife appointments in their own home, sounds lovely and relaxed.

Never seen a doctor about the pregnancy, went for a couple of scans at the hospital, otherwise the midwife just pops round.

I let my Dr know with DS1 to confirm +ve result, also saw him when I had +ve result with DS2 as I was worried about any implications being pregnant again 9mths after giving birth. There are forms on reception desk that you fill in if you are 'happy to be pregnant'.
