Caffeine ( second trimester)

I had a serious coffee habit before being pregnant and mainly to cope with how little sleep I get with my children. Haven't had much due to feeling sick but now I'm feeling better it's really hard not to reach for a coffee when I'm exhausted. I've been up all night with a sick child and yesterday was similar and I ended up having more caffeine than I should then worried about it all night! How risky is having too much caffeine for the baby?I've looked it up and seems to be a risk of miscarriage is that right? Any tips for staying awake under extreme circumstances ( one of my children is disabled so no chance of sorting sleep as it's unavoidable issues).

Hello @Used2bthin

I am a caffeine-addict and had a serious amount before pregnancy too!
I did start limiting to two cups a day but found that number slowly crept up!
I am 13 weeks so only just in second trimester but I average between 2-4 a day depending on how tired I am.
My mum is a tea addict and although it has not as much caffeine in, when she was pregnant with me and my siblings, she drank endless amounts as there wasn't the 'warnings' with caffeine then.
When I tell people now I have to restrict caffeine they think I'm joking!!
Everybody is different and if you fancy that one extra coffee I say go for it, we all know our limits and what a sensible amount is.

In terms of staying awake, I have a DP with the loudest snoring in the world that I guarantee will keep you awake if you'd like to borrow him for the next 6 months (please Hmm)
Haha xxx

Thanks but I have one of those ( snoring partners)!
Thanks for your reply it's good to know I am not the only one. I know what you mean about the amount creeping up. I used to have 5-7 cups of coffee machine coffee , it takes more to get the same effect. Now I've got back down to one but since not feeling so sick it's definitely creeping up and I had three(weak) coffees yesterday.

I'm now third trimester and have three coffee machine coffees every day. I do try to make one a decaf, but it depends how knackered I am!

There is an extremely tenuous link between miscarriage and caffeine, and by the second trimester I felt comfortable reintroducing coffee (I was so sick in the first trimester that I couldn't have stomached it, or tea)

Thanks willymcwill. That's reassuring. I've had a second very weak one- I must get some decaff or half caff beans too actually. I'm almost 16 weeks and still sick in the evenings (probably through tiredness as much as anything).
I'd forgotten how exhausting it all is-still waiting for my second trimester feel good time!
