Brown discharge yet again :-(

Hi Folks

Suppose I'm posting this looking for reassurance. I've had brown discharge on and off since I fell pregnant and I'm now 13 weeks. I've had 2 scans due to the discharge which showed my little squirt wriggling with a healthy heartbeat. However as I haven't had any for a while I started to believe everything was going to be ok and the yesterday it came back Hmm. We have the 12 week scan on Monday which is good but I've stupidly convinced myself something has happened. Anybody else experienced something similar?

I had brown discharge until about 16 weeks, my friend had it all through her pregnancy. Just get checked if you are worried, it doesn't matter how many times you go

I'll hold out until Monday I suppose. Ridiculous how you think you're wasting people's time!!

I had it on and off with dc2.

Apparently it's only a worry if it's bright red as the dark stuff is old blood. Get it checked out though to put your mind at rest.

I had brown stringy (sorry) discharge off and on from week 8-15. Freaked me out every single time, but I'm now 35 weeks and still have a very wriggly baby inside me so try not to worry. Like PP said, apparently it's only a worry if it's bright red, but you can always call for reassurance.

Thanks ladies. Think I might call my midwife and have a chat. I'll still be panicking until Monday like a loon!

If you're worried don't leave it over the weekend to drive yourself nuts. EPU generally shuts over the weekend so go today and get some reassurance!

Just spoken to midwife. She doesn't think it's anything to worry about and said seeing as I've got my scan on Monday I wouldn't be see until then anyway. That's a weekend of worrying for me Confused

I'm 14 weeks tomorrow and had a good bit of brown discharge with a little pink too between 6 and 11 weeks

My doctor said it's probably from the cervix and that it only takes a tiny amount of blood (say from a blood vessel in the cervix) to stain your discharge enough to look worrisome

As others say brown is old blood
Bad pain and bright red blood is cause for concern

But do call the MW for some reassurance
I know it's very hard not to worry even hearing all was fine with others. I'm still double checking the loo roll every time I go to the loo!

Guaranteed these things will happen at the weekend! The rational part of me thinks it'll be fine but that niggle will always be there. Roll on Monday 2:00pm!!!

Sorry OP but I get so annoyed when I see threads like yours full of 'brown blood is old blood and mostly nothing to worry about' replies. I know it's people trying to be comforting and put you at ease but I strongly feel it gives you a false sense of security.

ANY bleeding, brown red or pink, is something to get checked asap. It doesn't matter if you've had it before and the baby was okay then. Go to a&e if you have to.

I'm not trying to worry you or upset you OP. I was in your position a few years ago- first time pregnant and having brown discharge. Everyone told me it was so common and most people go on to have a healthy pregnancy and baby. So I waited to see if it went away. It didn't. So I went to the epu for a scan, I'd had a mmc.
Second pregnancy, had brown discharge. Went straight to a&e. Booked in for a scan, all good. This one stuck around and is now 16 months.
Third pregnancy got to 18 weeks before the brown discharge started. Again, went to a day assessment unit. No heartbeat.

ALWAYS get it checked out as soon as you can, whether it's at the GP, epu or a&e (particularly if your epu is via referral only like mine was- a&e was the only option on a bank holiday weekend).

Sorry didn't mean that to be such a wall of text, my phone doesn't like formatting posts.

Brown discharge isn't normal, but it is common.

It's all well and good telling someone to go to a & e as soon as possible with it but you have to bare in mind there's not a single thing anyone's going to be able to do to give you a different outcome at this stage in a pregnancy.

A & e is for emergencies, not for putting your mind at rest. I say this as someone that had multiple bleeds through my last pregnancy and paid out about £400 in private scans because a & e is not the place for brown discharge!
