Herpes in pregnancy

Hi I'm new to this site and desperate for some advice. I am currently 35 weeks pregnant. I found out 4 years ago that I have genital herpes. I have learnt over time how to deal with it and even though I had a handful of outbreaks at the beginning of the pregnancy I haven't had any for the last 9 weeks. I did inform my midwife at the beginning and to be honest she really didn't seem bothered like it wasn't anything big at all. Now I know it's getting closer and closer to the delivery I am getting so petrified. I am going to start taking acyclovir from next week to prevent any possible outbreaks but I'm still so scared. What if the baby catches it? I'm really thinking the worst and need some reassurance. Has anybody gone through this or known anybody that has gone through this? Thank you so much x

Am reporting the posts above....trying to sell a service which is just not possible and total bull. Just fodder for so-called AIDS denialists.

Hi there - I know this is an old post but I am currently in a similar situation and just wanted to ask if taking the acyclovir in the last 4 weeks worked for you and if you would recommend? I’m only 13 weeks at the moment but have had a couple outbreaks during this time and want to know whether it’s safe to have a natural birth. Thanks x

Hi gee93,

I did indeed have a natural birth. I took the acyclovir during the last 4 weeks, didn't have any outbreaks and was able to give birth naturally it was a lovely labour. With my second son who I had 9 weeks ago I chose to have a c section. The only reason for this was I had a lot more outbreaks second time around, probably because I had the stress of being pregnant and looking after a 2 year old lol. I did start taking the acyclovir at 36 weeks again and again didn't have one outbreak while taking them but for some reason felt very anxious so decided to go for the c section. How are you feeling? Xx

Aww that’s good to know congratulations! I’m feeling a bit anxious about it because it’s my first child but I’ve had it for around 6 or 7 years so hoping any risk is low. I did mention it in my file but none of the midwives I’ve seen so far have really mentioned anything so I’m wondering if that will come later on in pregnancy. Were they discreet about it during labour? And did you get prescribed the acyclovir by a doctor? I’ve only ever ordered it online via the Superdrug doctor. Thanks x

Hey,

No they literally never mentioned it. Not once in my labour was it mentioned. I asked them for the acyclovir at like 35 weeks and my midwife prescribed it. Started taking it at 36 weeks x3 s day. You will be fine. They would never ever do anything to put your baby at risk xx
