So it costs a quarter of a mil to raise a kid in the UK. I went to a space cafe in Bali where a beer is 50p and a shroom shake is 2 quid. Granted you have to hang out with Millenials who let fireworks off on the beach willy nilly but food for thought. No?

This post doesn't make that much sense have you been partaking of the shroom shakes?

Lj8893 · 18/07/2017 12:15

Does it really? How on earth does it cost that much? I can't imagine how it's going to cost me that much to raise dd.

owltrousers · 18/07/2017 12:30

what....

Oysterbabe · 18/07/2017 12:30

Not really. I'd rather cuddle my babies and watch Netflix in my PJs than partake in a shroom shake tbh.

Gothbaby · 18/07/2017 12:32

I don't understand this post. .. are you trying to make these mum's/mum's to be feel even more insecure about the future or just ma king a badly judged observation?

ScotsLamb · 18/07/2017 12:37

But going round the world and having a party leaves you with just some memories.
Memories won't look after me in my old age. That's why I need children.

thatorchidmoment · 18/07/2017 12:39

I can't imagine anything worse than hanging out in Bali with shroomed millennials and their fireworks (is that a euphemism?). And I'm currently heavily pregnant with number 4. Exhausted and a bit fed up, but in a few weeks, I will get to cuddle my squishy newborn and bring him/her home to meet the siblings. What could be better than that?

Back away from the psychedelic stuff OP.

Journalist?

ScotsLamb · 18/07/2017 14:57

HOpefully. I want my tongue in cheek comment published.
Probably someone off their face on the 'shroom shakes.

Winston84 · 18/07/2017 15:02

YABOS just an honest question. Seems like a lot of money to me fam.

Goodnightsweetheart1 · 18/07/2017 15:29

Why not have kids and take them to Bali, kids love fireworks. Might be hard to get them to eat shrooms though. Although in milkshake form anything is possible.

LucyLugosi · 18/07/2017 15:31

I fully intend to take my children to Bali for shroom shakes now. Thanks for this post, without it I'd have been so lost.

PotteringAlong · 18/07/2017 15:33

Well it is a lot of money. Most of that cost is loss of earnings from maternity leave / going part time. I'm a teacher. I've had 3 maternity leaves in 6 years and when I went part time after my second DS was born my salary dropped by £20k a year.

If I sack it all in go travel the world my salary would still drop. In fact, it would drop more because I wouldn't be working.

It almost makes 3 children cost effective Grin

londonfeather · 18/07/2017 17:04

Or a lot of people do both!

Ecureuil · 18/07/2017 17:10

Or you could do all that, then settle down and have kids? Or do whatever you want with your life. Fam.

Mandraki · 18/07/2017 17:13

Quarter of a mil over a long time though. If I had quarter of a mil right now in 2017, I probably wouldn't be having a baby right now, I'd have better hair for a start. But I don't so I'm hedging my bets and having a baby. Expensive but over time and I don't even have to leave the house fam.

Defuzzing · 18/07/2017 17:24

There is no comparison. I would choose my children every time. We can go to Bali when they're grown. Not in to frying my brain though so wouldn't be having "shrooms" or any other drugs anyway. You should "Talk to Frank" Winston84 Wink

metalmum15 · 18/07/2017 17:43

Well fam, quite honestly I've never fancied Bali so I think I'll stick with the kids, thanks.

JudyBlumeForever · 18/07/2017 17:48

I've experienced Bali and experienced having a baby. I enjoyed Bali (not enough to visit again though) and enjoyed having a baby (so much so that we had another one)...

Riversleep · 18/07/2017 17:54

I would imagine Bali for the next 18 years, hanging around with Millenials when you are a balding middle aged drug addict wouldn't be much fun though Grin The 250K is over 18 years.
I always wonder if the people who say they will take the kids to Bali actually do that when they calculate the cost of full priced flights for their kids, and the expense of not living in a hut on the beach when compared to an all inclusive in the Canary Islands.

metalmum15 · 18/07/2017 17:55

On another note, JudyBlume - best name ever!

My kids have been exceedingly annoying for the past couple of days though, so at the moment, yes, i'd rather be on a beach in Bali drinking 50p beer than trying to justify why I couldn't go to yet another of their horrific sports days, or why they can't just wear their shorts and no top to the school disco Hmm
