First trimester weight gain - is this normal?!

First timer here, and have no idea what's normal! My BMI was 20.2 before conceiving - I weighed 8st 13. I'm 10 weeks on Weds, weighed myself this morning and I've gained about 6lb already!

I'm sure I've read that you're not really supposed to start gaining till the second trimester, and now I'm panicking that I'm gaining too much too quickly! I'm gonna be enormous by the end of this!

Some people gain more in the first trimester than others. I, for example, could only combat nausea with starchy carbs, like chips and bread and pasta. I generally don't eat those, so I gained more than the usual in my first trimester. I'm eating less now because the baby is taking up the space my stomach usually would.

It will all balance out in the end - I wasn't over the normal weight gain with my first, despite following the same pattern.

Everyone is different! I actually lost weight in the first trimester as I was so nauseous, but have more than made up for it now!
Try not to worry, weight gain doesn't necessarily stay the same at every stage either, most months I've had a fairly steady weight increase but one of those months I put on a massive amount, and then only gained what I had been gaining in the months previous.

Thanks both! I think it's partly because I worked so hard to lose 6 stone before ttc that my head's in a weird place about the gain...wasn't expecting so much weight to go on so quickly! You've both reassured me a bit though!

I'm 7w today and somehow I've gained nearly 2kg already. No idea how as I'm really nauseous and have completely gone off chocolate. I've also ditched my morning latte, which reduces my calorie intake quite a lot. I was so shocked when I was weighed.

I've been in a bit of a weird headspace about it recently too, I'm 30+2 now and gained nearly three stone so far (having twins), I've never been big as such but been very conscious the past few weeks 😓
We have to remember we're growing babies and we'll put on what we need to!

I checked my weight at around 6 weeks and had put on a stone. I've checked again around 8 weeks and it's come off again, so think weight must fluctuate quite a bit in early pregnancy, probably bloating, water retention etc.

Hey, try not to stress about your weight. I was the same BMI as you and have gained 35lbs at almost 37 weeks. It's normal. It's not always fun, but it comes off fast afterwards if you're sensible. It bothers me too Hun, but it's a sign that baby is growing well and your body is doing what it should be, if it makes you feel better, I gained 85lbs with my first son and I lost all of it by 5 months pp breastfeeding, eating well and exercising 4x a week. I ended up looking better than pre preg. This time I gained 10 lbs in the first Tri because I was so lean my body needed it! X

I'm just coming up to 21 weeks pregnant and have so far put on 1st 7lbs!! I wasn't overweight when I got pregnant but was heavier than I would have liked to be.

I had horrendous nausea and sickness until 14 weeks and then more manageable sickness until 18 weeks, I just had to eat a lot of carbs, as it was the only thing my body wanted and it did seem to help with the nausea.

I feel heavy already, god knows what I will be like when I get to 40 weeks but I'm not over eating or making bad choices, I'm staying active everyday.

It's so hard, I think you just need to accept that you will put weight on and that your body will change. I am really struggling to accept it!!

I'm nearly 24 weeks pregnant and have gained over a stone so far, a big chunk of that weight gain was in the first trimester! I was ravinously hungry all the time. Now my appetite is completely back to normal. I've always been petite and the midwife wasn't at all concerned about the weight gain.
