Class B strep

Just wondering if anyone else had this ?
I am 35 weeks pregnant and have been told il have to stay in longer (second child ) and have four lots of antibiotics there's me thinking I'd be in and out ....

Yes, I had group b strep in last pregnancy but it wasn't discovered until after baby was born. Unfortunately our hospital buggered the whole thing up and 'forgot' to tell us the test results, sent us home and we were rushed back to hospital 4 days after birth for a 48 hour cautionary course of antibiotics for baby.

Luckily he was absolutely fine and hadn't contracted it.

In labour they have to give you antibiotics every 4 hours I think until baby is born (as obviously they don't know when it will be born) and they only work if baby has them at a certain time before it's born. They will need to then run tests to check baby hasn't been infected with it - these take around 48 hours to come back.

It's all very precautionary , but it can be very serious if it's not detected in baby.

Oh yes tbh I am more then happy to stay in as a result I don't want any harm towards her .... they said 24 hours at least so I've packed a bigger bag ....

I had tests for something else and it came back, my midwife said some people never even know they have it .....

Yes I had it. Went in as normal in labour (when I couldn't cope any longer) and stayed in for 24 hours after dd's birth so her temp and heart rate were monitored.

Basically you need at least 4 hours of antibiotics before baby is born so they have time to cross the placenta, and 24 hours of monitoring afterwards to double check your baby's breathing and temp is normal. It is annoying, but it's so important because GBS can cause some babies to become seriously unwell very shortly after birth.

I'm on edge a little because with my son it was all so fast I was having cramping and then my waters went and he was born.
I'm hoping I have more signs this time so I can be ready and get to hospital as I literally just made it with my DS

Yep had it with both pregnancies. It comes and goes so may not show up every time they test. If they suspect you have it, then antibiotics pre and post birth are the way of things.

I had to remind them a couple of times during my labour so I'd make sure whoever is with you to just check in that you've had them. Very mow risk if treated this way.

Good that you know in time and can prepare for it and a slightly longer stay.

Yeah I've bought some more bits for baby and me in our bags just in case.
And they put stickers all over my notes bright yellow too so they can really miss it but il be reminding them of course.
I feel like I was more prepared my first pregnancy because I had no idea what was happening if you get me haha

I imagine if you have a very quick labour and birth they may give the antibiotics after baby is born instead.

Had a meeting with my consultant a few weeks ago, and she said despite me having it first time around, unless it's picked up on a test for something else, they won't test for it and won't give me antibiotics in labour either! I wish they would just routinely test for it...

Yeah I'm kind of glad I had the other issue for them to find it but I'm terrified of being in hospital alone I know my partner will be there as much as he's allowed but I hate the place ☹️

I was tested for it after my waters broke before labour and it was positive but they didn't tell us that until dd was around 8 hours old so no antibiotics. They decided yo keep us in that night so obs but no antibiotics given.

This time around they have told me I won't be tested for it or given any antibiotics unless I'd had a previous child infected by it.

Bit worried that some hospitals take it more seriously than mine....😬 I'm 32 weeks nearly.

I'm sure they can't just say that ?! Maybe you should tell them you want r as is risky toe baby contracting it.... surely they wouldn't mind and what sort of an answer is that your other children haven't caught it before :(

I was rested for something else and it came up

@sweetpea - you can do it yourself using a kit, I did this as I was worried as a friend had a horrible experience. You do have to pay the £35 lab processing fee though. You can get one from here:

Just go to your gp and say your having symptoms of thrush (even if not) and they will swab you x

I had it (same as you, was tested for something else and it showed up). My labour was too fast for antibiotics, and neither me or my baby were given any post-natally. We were kept in for 24hrs monitoring and then allowed to go home. Seems the protocol is different everywhere.

Yeah my first birth was bloody fast so I'm wondering if the second will....
