Hi all, I've been diaognosed with a water infection and have been prescribed with Nitrofurantion antibiotics. Even though there is no evidence for fetal damage until labour/delivery I'm still hesitate to take them. Does anyone know if water infections can clear up on there own through extra fluid? On the other hand I don't want it to get worse either.. any help would be appreciated or anyone thats taken this med whilst pregnant would be great to talk to. x

I think if the UTI gets to your kidneys it can trigger premature labour (and make you very sick) so probably better to take them?

Untreated uti can be very dangerous. It can lead to much a more serious infection which has the potential to cause premature labour or even still birth. If I was you I would take the antibiotic.

Ok thank you. Feel like I've been on a rollacoster lately. I haven't had a great time with my heart, and then my 28 week bloods came back that I was anemic, which explained alot. I like to think I was the definition of great health until pregnancy Grin! I just want to do whats best for her, so I'll take them. Its just always a worry putting something in your body even if they r meant to be 'safe'. X

I used to suffer from chronic, debilitating cystitis and got a couple of kidney infections because of it... my advice: stop worrying and take the pills!! The only reason medicines are such an issue in pregnancy is because, ethically, studies can't be done on pregnant women - many of them are unlikely to have any ill effects, so a doctor will prescribe on the basis of benefit vs. risk. In your case, benefit most certainly outweighs any risk. Hope this helps reassure you, and I hope you feel better soon. Cystitis is hideous!! X

I agree that utis can trigger premature labour so you need to take the drugs.
