How much weight should I gain and when does it start piling on?

Is there a chart somewhere that tells you how much and when the pounds start piling on? Am only seven weeks and already have put on two pounds (after I'd spent months trying to shed the baby weight from first DC!) This could well poss be due to the amount of ginger biscuits and comfort food I'm eating because I feel so sick all the time! But just wondered...

Unless you are underweight don't worry, it will happen, you only need an extra 300 calories a day and it take 1500 to gain a pound so you can infer that you can gain weight very slowly and it be fine. Or you can do what I did and live on chocolate and turn lardy by five months

lulumama · 23/03/2007 08:29

the 300 calories a day is for the last trimester !!

a gain of around 25 pounds is average, and includes extra fat stores, breast tissue, baby, weight of the uterus, placenta, amniotic fluid, blood volume etc....

just eat normally, and if it stops you feeling sick, don;t worry too much..it will even out over the next 33 weeks ! x

I thought i was close to 11 stone when i got pregnant. At my scan last week they weighed me and i was 10 st 5, yesterday my midwife weighed me at 10st 3!! i was a bit concerned but she said it was fine! i'm not planning on putting too much excess weight on (well im hoping!!)
I think its mostly in the third trimester you gain the most weight?!? im no expert though

It piles on AFTER you've had the baby in my experience!!!!

I am 7 weeks tomorrow. I have lost 2 kgs, but already a friend has noticed my 'changing shape' and I have had to 'alter' my clothes!!

With my first 3 pregnancies I put on exactly the same weight in the end. My 1st I had put on a stone by 6 months and with my 3rd I had only put on 5lbs by 6 months. By 40 weeks - 27lbs!!!

charNbump · 23/03/2007 09:10

i put on like 4lbs in the first few weeks of being pregnant, but am sure it was all fluid retention. After that was in my size 8's til about 22/23 weeks then gradually its gone on from there. I'd say i gained the most between 25 & 30 weeks. Am 36 weeks now and weight has sort of plateued now..... i have gained about 1stone & 1/2.I'm happy with this though as i really haven't changed much, my bum is a bit bigger but generally its all bump. I really wouldn't bother watching the scales....you'll have spurts that will even off as lulumama says.....just ask yourself do u really need that 3rd Marsbar????

Good luck. xxxxxx

I gained the most weight in the third trimester. My total gain was about 21lbs but I'm small anyway - not sure what is normal! My MIL put on around 3 stone with both of hers but lost it all afterwards. So long as you don't go mad, I wouldn't worry.

MrsFish · 23/03/2007 10:10

From the books I have read they reckon - 2-3 pound in the first trimester and 12 pound in both the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. That is approx 27 pound/just shy of 2 stone.

I am 12+5 and have put on 6 pound already but then again I put on weight very easily, I only have to look at a biscuit...

Oh and a pound in weight is equal to eating an extra 3000 calories over your normal amount. Same to lose a pound

MrsMar · 23/03/2007 10:55

I put on 5 lbs in the first 12 weeks, mainly due to comfort eating while dealing with horrendous morning sickness I think. I've since lost about 3lbs as I've returned to my normal (ish) eating habits so total weight gain at 14+2 is 2 lbs so far. I've definitely changed shape though, I've lost quite a bit off my arms, I've noticed shirts are a little looser around the arm holes, but tummy is defnitely bigger. Having to go around with top button undone quite a lot of the time! I've been puzzled about my lack of weight gain though, because I've been eating like a crazy woman, sooooo hungry, but normally I only have to look at a chip to put on weight. I'm putting it down to increased metabolic rate. I could be wrong though.... I read somewhere if you're overweight to start with, you tend to put less on in pregnancy, and I was about 3 stone overweight, so maybe it's down to that. Basically I have no idea!! ;)

When pg with my dd I put on over 5 stone That's cos I was really greedy and used pg as an excuse to gorge. I'd gone from 8 to 9 stone within the first 12 weeks and just carried on from there!

Think I've put on quite a few pies this time around (am only 10w). I am more hungry than usual and eating does seem to help my ms. Am resisting the urge to weigh myself though. Kind of think - ah sod it, I'll just loose the weight afterwards. Did last time. Saying that, I will try and resist going into every chip shop I pass for a scallop for the road

cupcakesgalore · 23/03/2007 13:16

I'm finding the weight going on more rapidly now (25 wks). It's scary so I've decided the scales have to be put away! I started out around 9 st 7 and now I'm 10st 13...eeek. Finding it more annoying this time =because I lost loads of weight after my 3rd pg. when I had mumps, flu x 3 and arthritis all in 6 wks. My bum is def. a bit bigger but nowhere else is particularly larger though. I find that after giving birth I am so hungry breastfeeding that that is when I'm in danger of puytting on weight..

fannyannie · 23/03/2007 13:19

Wtih DS1 I put on 5st over the 9 months

DS2 I put on 3 stone (again over the 3 months)

This time I've got to 29 weeks and have only put on 1 stone - so quite pleased really
