What would you get in for last big shop?!

Hello,

I am having my section on Thursday so we will go do a big shop this week to stock up so we dont need to leave the house for a bit if it's difficult/we dont want to.

Just wondering what people would stock up on? What did you forget that would have been helpful? Anything useful I'm bound to forget?!

TIA

Lots of easy food that Dh can prep

milk (freeze some if you don't like uht)

Tins/pasta/sauces

kingfishergreen · 02/07/2017 09:57

Kitchen roll. I was a staunch J-cloth user until DD arrived, since then a nice disposable sogginess mopper upperer has been invaluable.

And oven meals you can eat with one hand. Again, I was "all about" home cooking, but for those first few weeks, something you can bung in the oven and eat out of the tub is a god send.

Juice, ideally with veg in (to counteract the oven meals with heavy doses of vitamins).

Good luck and CONGRATULATIONS!

PerpetualStudent · 02/07/2017 09:58

I ordered prosecco, pate and brie in mine! Obviously thinking less practically than you guys Blush

But I did also get lots of cereal bar/snacky things I could eat one handed while breastfeeding.

ChaircatMiaow · 02/07/2017 10:00

Loaves of bread for freezer.

Plenty of eggs and cheese. You'll never go hungry with eggs and cheese and bread in the house Smile

Do you have a slow cooker? Also due to have a section at the end of the month and planning on having lots of freeze and dump bags ready for slow cooker so that all I have to do is pull a bag out the night before.

greendale17 · 02/07/2017 10:00

Snacks for late night/ all night munchies

SolomanDaisy · 02/07/2017 10:02

Fresh pasta. We ate a lot of filled fresh pasta. Biscuits if you're going to try and breastfeed, you'll get hungry during the night and a midwife recommended that I have a biscuit with every feed during the night. Bread to stick in the freezer so you have some if you run out. Whatever you like to eat if you get constipated, which happens frequently after a c section.

Caenea · 02/07/2017 10:06

Biscuits/snacky foods you like. Even if you choose not to bf, you'll be spending a LARGE amount of time sat down and establishing feeding - it's hungry work.

Drinks. Squash, sparkling water, fruit juice, whatever it is you like to drink. Babies are thirsty work.

If your OH can't cook brilliantly well, plenty of easy meals - you can get lovely pasta sauces that can be thrown in with pasta and meat of your choice, easy peasy. You can get packet mixes for casseroles and again, all that needs to be done for those is thrown in the pot.

Stock up on things like breast pads/maternity towels/nappies. You don't have enough. You think you do. You don't.

We forgot tea bags. Of all the things.

Lavender oil. I'm not sure what the crack is with C-section scars and baths/getting them wet but I had a third degree tear and lavender oil and warm water poured over a maternity pad was bliss against my battered bits.

Bread - toast is delightful at all times of the day and you can keep a couple of loaves in the freezer.

You might well be eating one handed for a while, so when cooking, bear in mind it might need to be eaten with only a fork.

Laundry detergent. Babies create washing like there's no tomorrow. I think that's everything!

kingfishergreen · 02/07/2017 10:18

Napisan! Gets poo out of anything!

GreenGoblin0 · 02/07/2017 10:20

Prune juice

napisan - for washing clothes that have sick/wee/poo on. it gets rid of germs and you add to normal detergent

healthy snacks - we got raw food cereal/fruit bars and nuts

lots of fresh fruit and veg

clickhappy · 02/07/2017 10:22

If you have a local deli which does ready fresh meals, or you or someone can stock up on healthy freezer food that you can just bung in the oven, it will be a lifesaver.

I agree re: snacks, and filtered milk has a longer date.

Take your favourite snacks to the hospital too

I had lots of dried fruit in to help with that first poo as well.

Good luck!

Things you couldn't eat when you were pregnant, like pate and brie!

EssentialHummus · 02/07/2017 10:27

I ordered prosecco, pate and brie in mine!

This'll be me too Blush

I'm planning ready meals from Cook (not cheap but great and high quality), chicken pieces for freezer to add to those Maggi cook in the bag sauces with some veg and potatoes, lots of biscuits, lots of juice. Throughout this pregnancy I've also massively craved tinned peaches, so more of those if that continues.

JaneEyre70 · 02/07/2017 10:28

Lots of really easy ready meals, and easy things like pasta. Our family fave quick tea is to slam a load of chopped veg in the oven on a high heat (onion, pepper, courgette, fennel, squash) and then cook some pasta and mix all together with some good pesto. Takes no time and is fairly healthy. Freeze some 2 pint milk cartons and make sure you have loads of tea/coffee and biscuits for the hoardes that will land on your doorstep!! Best tip for visitors too - if anyone offers help, get them to prep you a meal or bung a load of washing in the machine. That's invaluable. And good luck Smile

Hollyhop17 · 02/07/2017 15:15

Thanks all. Very helpful! I hadnt thought about detergent etc so will stock up on that.

DSIL is bringing food for the freezer as is my mum. I have a slow cooker so will look up some recipes for freezing.

Biscuits seems to be key, so will get lots of those! Also lots of dried fruit.

Never heard of napisan so thanks for that tip.

God, it's in 4 days...

Handcream and gentle on skin soap to have by every sink. I didn't realise how much extra handwashing a newborn would mean and they got really chapped quickly.

Also as many nice quality ready meals/ low prep meals (that you can't eat one handed if planning to bf) as you can fit in the freezer and biscuits/tea etc for guests. Cereal bars and big bottles of water for you to keep your energy up between meals.

Painkillers and a natural laxative like fig syrup for you just in case. Even with an 'easy' delivery the bruising can be quite painful weeks1-2.

And yes to anything you love that you haven't had. Wine, cheese, rare steak!

20thcenturybitch · 02/07/2017 15:28

Sorry I missed that it's a section. But in that case get strongest OTC painkillers you can in the house. My friend was sent home with just paracetamol and really needed something stronger the first week.

Hollyhop17 · 02/07/2017 15:43

20thcentury, I assumed you would be discharged from the hospital with painkillers, no?

OP posts:
20thcenturybitch · 02/07/2017 17:43

I haven't had a section myself, but my friend was told to 'just take paracetamol'(I don't know if they provided it or meant her own). She was in a lot of pain.

wowbutter · 02/07/2017 17:50

I second pain relief!
I was in codeine, paracetamol, doclofenac and i ruprofen. The hospital only gave me paracetamol.

bluechameleon · 02/07/2017 17:57

The one handed eating things is important - you won't want spaghetti for ages! I had a lot of things you can toast in the early days - crumpets, teacakes, bagels etc. Oven pizzas and garlic bread, pasta and sauce, curry and rice type meals.

Hollyhop17 · 02/07/2017 18:20

Right ok, good to know. Will stock up on painkillers as well!

I've had HG throughout the whole bloody pregnancy so have lived on plain, bland carbs when I can keep them down. So looking forward to tasty, rich food again but they are probably too consuming to prepare/eat. Boooo.

Thanks all.

Tuc crackers were a life saver for me in the first few early days. And other easy to grab food. Oh and all the things you weren't able to eat/drink during pregnancy.

MrsChopper · 02/07/2017 18:26

Oh and I had a section. Whilst I was in a merry morphine-diclofenac-paracetamol state in hospital, I was not given anything to take home!
