Taking aspirin during pregnancy?

Hi
I have been advised to take 75mg of disposable aspirin from 12 weeks of pregnancy due to family history of pre-eclampsia (sister had it twice) - but I have only just got my prescription at 14+3 weeks pregnant, should I start them? I'm in two minds because i don't really like the thought of taking any medication during pregnancy, but then again it could also help me. I don't know what to do.. is it safe?

Its perfectly safe i was prescribed it too by a consultant but to be honest im hit n miss at taking it. Youre meant to take it til like 37 weeks and then the effects of it wear off after 3 days anyway

Yes, start them straight away! I'm also higher risk of pre-eclampsia due to twins and was advised by my consultant that's as long as I started taking them before 16 weeks (I think) the risk is reduced by something like 20-30%!
I also didn't like the idea of taking any medication but 75mg is barely anything :)

But do you have a history of PE? Who advised you to take them? If medical advise then yes start straight away

Orangebird69 · 02/07/2017 09:08

My obstetrician told me to take them from my first scan (5+4). I was 39 when I fell pregnant so I think it was an age thing, to steer away from pre-eclampsia.

Thanks! And it was my midwife who advised me to take them, due to my sister having pre eclampsia twice during her pregnancies - so because of family history I would be at higher risk too.

I was advised to take 75mg of aspirin by consultant due to blood clot in previous pregnancy and 4 mc last year. I didn't get a prescription - they're pennies in Boots or supermarkets. I'm now also injecting Clexane on top of the aspirin to try and prevent clots. It's perfectly safe in pregnancy and is quite common.

I was prescribed aspirin - it's a common med in pregnancy for different reasons

SparkyBlue · 02/07/2017 09:52

I was prescribed it as well due to having previously had pre eclampsia.

MrsChopper · 02/07/2017 09:53

I have had PE and consultant told me in any future pregnancues I will be prescribed aspirin to try and prevent it happening again.

NotAnotherUserName5 · 02/07/2017 10:29

I took it with my last pregnancy, had baby no problems from taking it

Ttc321 · 02/07/2017 17:10

Thanks all, I'm going to start it from now

I'll be starting it on Friday when I'm 12 weeks because of high BP with first pregnancy. I've bought some 75mg tablets rather than getting on prescription as they're so cheap.

DappledThings · 02/07/2017 19:08

I've been advised this time as well but I'm on 150mg. Only because of me having high bp with DS even though it was on day 41+3, nothing high at all throughout the rest if the pregnancy.

The doctor I saw when I was this time referred to the bp antenatal clinic said it's possible all pregnant women will be advised to take it in the future, that's how confident they are it is both safe and beneficial

FlipperSkipper · 02/07/2017 19:14

I took it in pregnancy due to pre existing high blood pressure and a borderline diagnosis of a blood clotting disorder. I developed pre eclampsia at 35+3 and my baby was delivered at 35+6. I don't know if the aspirin made a difference but I'm glad I took it as it could have been worse without it.

MmmMalbec · 02/07/2017 21:05

I had pre e with my first and have been on aspirin since 7 weeks this time. My consultant and midwife both advised it. Perfectly common and safe to take!

twinkle1972 · 03/07/2017 15:42

I'm on it due to my age. 45! And family history of blood clots
