Waters breaking or contractions starting

What is more popular contractions starting or waters breaking ?

The norm is for contractions to start and build gradually and your waters should go (sometimes they don't) around the time you're ready to push.

PROM premature rupture of membranes can happen but it's not as common and is often caused by an infection. It is possible to go into labour naturally within 24 hours of your waters breaking, which is usually around the time the hospital would want to start antibiotics and look at induction

princessachica · 30/06/2017 18:26

Yeah cause I really don't want to get induced at all so I fear waters breaking and then contractions not starting !!! I'm fearing that my first birth my contractions started haaa then I gave birth naturally

Oysterbabe · 30/06/2017 18:27

My waters broke then contractions started 12 hours later.

princessachica · 30/06/2017 18:43

So do they just start and if they break I'm sure I can decide to wait for them to start even if it's over time cause I not want to be induced 100%

It's perfectly possible to start labour naturally following PROM.

If that happens the best thing to do is to keep active. If you start to feel tired sit on a ball so you're in a nice upright position but walk about as much as you can. Most labours will start on their own within 20 hours. Unless there is a complication they won't want to induce and will encourage you to keep active and start off naturally

Holdbacktheriver · 30/06/2017 18:48

It's really not the norm for them to break first. Can I ask why you're so worried about induction?

princessachica · 30/06/2017 18:51

Cause I have heard the fake contractions are worse and I do not want a epidural cause of the pain either I am a really natural person

With DC1 my waters broke and I started getting contractions within minutes.

princessachica · 30/06/2017 18:56

Wow within minutes

IHeartKingThistle · 30/06/2017 18:58

I didn't realise that was unusual!

Spam88 · 30/06/2017 19:01

My contractions started about 3 hours before my waters went, but my cervix wasn't really doing anything at that point. They booked me in for an induction 24 hours later but you can obviously refuse this. I didn't end up getting induced because things got going on their own, but it was well over 24 hours later when I eventually gave birth, and me and baby both ended up on antibiotics.

With regard to the epidural, I wouldn't get too hung up on what you do or don't want to happen. You really just need to be flexible. I went in not wanting anything other than gas and air, but after more than 24 hours of contractions I was more than happy to go with the doctor's recommendation to have an epidural, and also ended up on an oxytocin drip which they'd advise an epidural for anyway. Honestly the epidural was like the best thing ever, don't know why I didn't just get one straight away 😂

princessachica · 30/06/2017 19:01

No I don't know if it's usual or not It's strange I didn't have that happen to me I just started contractions... well I took my mucus plug out with a desert spoon then that night I got in the bath n my contractions started

WinterRose92 · 30/06/2017 19:02

For me my contractions started, really mild, I was in early labour for quite a while. My waters didn't break, the midwife had to do that for me! Once she had done that, thing sped up pretty fast! I used diamorphine and gas and air.
The best advice I can give you is to try not to worry to much, just try and go with it. I know it sounds hard to do but that's the attitude I went in with. It was my first, and it is scary but I sort of thought, 'Baby needs to come out somehow! Whatever happens, happens.' Hope this helps a bit! Flowers

princessachica · 30/06/2017 19:04

Yeah so I removed my mucus plug with a desert spoon that night got in the bath contractions came then I went hospital they popped my waters then she came within 9 hours

Both of mine were waters breaking first.

Holdbacktheriver · 30/06/2017 19:14

I'd recommend not using a dessert spoon Confused

Honestly labour and delivery isn't something anyone can control. It's lovely to have some preferences but don't get your heart set on anything, because well sometimes babies haven't read your birth plan.

The staff will want you to have as natural a birth as possible as in most cases where there are no complications that is what's best for both mother and baby. However they will advise you if they feel they need to intervene for the benefit of your health or that of your baby. Of course you don't have to accept any medical intervention, but these people are medically trained it's their job and they deal with this every day. They know what they're doing so it would be sensible to listen to their advice. After all the most important thing is safe delivery of your baby and both of you healthy afterwards.

glitterglitters · 30/06/2017 19:14

Yeah so I removed my mucus plug with a desert spoon

Wt....?

I was getting regular contractions with #1 but got sent home. When I did my waters went within 10 minutes and the pain and speed escalated 100X born 4 hours later.

PotteringAlong · 30/06/2017 19:18

You removed your mucus plug with a dessert spoon?! Why?!

Holdbacktheriver · 30/06/2017 19:20

Also just to pick up on the pain element.

Firstly there is nothing fake about the contractions with induction. They can often be stronger because your body is being forced to do something it wasn't ready to do yet. Many women cope just fine with gas & air with induction and plenty have no pain relief at all.

If your waters have already broken though your body has already started the process so there won't be quite as much encouragement needed therefore there's every chance it won't be anymore painful than a labour that had started spontaneously.

BikeRunSki · 30/06/2017 19:23

DC1- waters broke first, with a gush, and contractions started about 3 hrs later, DS arrived by emcs (although 10 cm dilated) 4 hours after that.

DC2- contractions started and were 1 min long and 5 mins apart from the start. Waters went with a "drip" after first contraction.

DrG13 · 30/06/2017 19:26

My waters broke (straight after dtd!) and contractions started pretty much immediately after.

Oysterbabe · 30/06/2017 19:29

I heard that the waters break before contractions in about 10% of cases and in the vast majority of those contractions will start on their own within 24 hours.

I had my birth preferences but when it came down to it I was happy to go with what ever the medical professionals thought was best for my baby. I would have preferred to do things all naturally too but when her heart rate was dipping and they wanted to give a hand getting her out with a ventouse I said crack on!

ConConstance · 30/06/2017 19:32

My waters broke first, in the doctors reception area in front of everyone !! MORTIFYING!! Contractions started an hour later and my daughter was born 20mins later.

PotteringAlong · 30/06/2017 19:35

My waters never broke with DS3 - he was born with my membranes intact.

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 30/06/2017 19:39

My second and first my waters went. Contractions followed waters imminently with DC2 (followed by baby within an hour)
DC3 waters broke on the friday then nothing... not a single bloomin contraction. Ended up being forced out on Sunday night. He's still a little bugger Grin
