Ooh pottering how lovely. Born in the caul. It's meant to be lucky Smile

silkpyjamasallday · 30/06/2017 19:47

My contractions started at 4am, I went to hospital at 7pm at which point I was checked and told I was 7-8cm dilated, felt the need to start pushing a short while later and my waters literally exploded out of me luckily the midwife managed to get out of the way Grin I didn't realise that the waters were supposed to go first?

Holdbacktheriver · 30/06/2017 19:48

Yes op. Waters breaking first really isn't the norm. As I mentioned upthread it's normally only caused by an infection.

Holdbacktheriver · 30/06/2017 19:49

Silk.

Waters are NOT meant to go first.

Contractions should start and build and then waters should go around the time you are fully and ready to push

annlee3817 · 30/06/2017 19:49

My waters started to go in small gushes, half an hour later contractions started amd waters went properly less than 3 hours after the first gush. I didn't get the urge to push until 90 mins after they went. First baby btw

PotteringAlong · 30/06/2017 19:50

holdback he will never drown apparently!

Just as he was born the midwife told DH to stand back. He asked why and she replied "because you're about to get wet if you stand there" Grin

My waters broke first with both DC1 and DC2.

With DC1, waters broke a week before labour started. I wasn't induced because this happened before 37 weeks, and the consultant said that the balance of risk was in favour of leaving baby in utero until 37 weeks unless there were signs of infection. So antibiotics for me until baby born, and IV antibiotics for baby when born until tests for infection in baby came back clear.

DC2 - I was induced as labour didn't start spontaneously within 24 hours.

DC3 was induced for different reasons.

They can't force you to get an induction if you really don't want one, but there are risks involved with refusing an induction. What those risks are will depend on why they want to induce you, and it's something you should consider before deciding 100% against induction. If it's about waters breaking too long before labour, then there's an increased risk of the baby (and yourself) getting an infection once the waters have broken.

needsomesunshineandwine · 30/06/2017 19:51

Contractions first with both labours, water didn't burst with 2nd as baby born in sac.

annlee3817 · 30/06/2017 19:52

To add, out of the 7 on my NcT group including myself 3 of us had waters starting first, two of which the whole lot before contractions starting.

Stiddleficks · 30/06/2017 19:54

My waters broke 48 hours before my contractions started with my first. I had to take my temp regularly and we had to stay in 24 hours because of the risk of infection. With my second they leaked slowly over a few days, so little that I had a sweep on the Monday and they were in tact and on the Thursday when I arrived at hospital they'd gone completely and I didn't know! It had been so hot and I was sweating so much that I thought i just thought I'd been sweating the whole time Blush. Had to stay in again for monitoring.

TIALEIGHANNE31 · 30/06/2017 19:55

My waters went first and contractions started within half an hour after!

Pidgythe2nd · 30/06/2017 19:59

DS - waters didn't break until I was pushing.
DD - I'm convinced she broke them with a huge kick! Contractions started 30 mins later. She was born just over 2 hours later.

Holdbacktheriver · 30/06/2017 19:59

pottering Grin
That's brilliant.

cornflakes91 · 30/06/2017 20:18

Dd1- Spontaneous labour starting with building contractions at 39+4, midwife broke waters when I was pushing to try to aid delivery. 12 hour labour.

DS- PPROM at 32 weeks, labour started a few hours later, infection suspected but never found. 5 hour labour.

DD2- Labour started suddenly with very intense contractions at 40+2, waters never broke, baby born in sac at home. 90 minute labour.

ems137 · 30/06/2017 20:31

1st baby - waters went without contractions. The hospital was very busy at the time and I was very young and without much knowledge. Contractions didn't start for another 48 hours. DS ended up in SCBU for several days having to endure lumbar puncture, blood test and IV medication due to infection.

2nd baby - all went to plan. Waters didn't break until close to the pushing stage.

3rd baby - waters went without contractions again. I insisted this time on them inducing me after 12 hours. I was put straight onto the drip and it was all fine. No worse than regular labour!

40 weeks pregnant with 4th.

Nothing to add that would be of much use after all the PPs anyway but am still stuck on the dessert spoon bit.

willescapesoon · 30/06/2017 20:42

Also not understanding why you would remove your mucus plug with a spoon!?

melissasummerfield · 30/06/2017 20:48

The mucus plug comment 😷

ShowOfHands · 30/06/2017 20:51

Waters broke abruptly with both of mine. Not due to infection but due to their positions in utero. With my first contractions started a few minutes later. With my second it took an hour or so.

Labour is all luck. I wanted all natural, at home, no drugs.

I had every intervention going then two caesareans (one crash, one emergency) and a haemorrhage/surgery.

picketfences · 30/06/2017 20:51

Did you pop the spoon in the dishwasher afterwards then put it back in the cutlery drawer?

CatsCantFlyFast · 30/06/2017 20:52

My waters broke, and 2 hours later contractions started and my baby arrived within 6 hours

princessachica · 30/06/2017 21:06

No I threw the spoon away
